Special Cleaning Consideration
one time every month the terrazzo finish in the reflection pool on the north entry to the
Court House will be stripped, cleaned and polished. Terrazzo is made up of natural and
manufactured materials, so the cleaning and polishing process must be exact. Any
deviation from the care of this material, for example substitution of chemicals or altering
the cleaning process, can damage it. For this reason we have outlined the steps we will
take to service this area
First step in this process is to remove the existing polish and clean the surface with Jasco
stripper and `Bane Knuckles Ultra Stripper". According to the NTMA (National Terrazzo
& Mosaic Association), the proper method of cleaning is to use a neutral cleaning
solution with a pH factor between 7.0 and 10.0. The cleaner must be free of harmful
A alkali, acid, etc., that might damage the surface. Any free standing water will be removed
by vacuum or squeegee so the dirt in the water does not reabsorb into the material.
After all free standing water is removed, we will apply a thin coat of penetrating type
terrazzo polish like the recommended Di Glow P 27 or Aldon Chemical terrazzo polish.
After the surface is allowed to air dry, we will polish the surface with a 17" electric floor
buffer, removing any haze and burning the polish into the terrazzo. Since there is no
accessible electricity, we will use the generators on our power washing trucks to power
the floor buffer.
Sealing terrazzo in extremely important. Because terrazzo's marble surface is practically
non -absorbent, most materials which stain simply do not affect it. However, the cement
binder is very porous and absorbs stains easily. This is the portion of the terrazzo surface
which requires much care and protection. A penetrating sealer is absorbed by the cement,
thus sealing the pores and greatly reducing its absorptive qualities. After cleaning and
polish, we will apply a impregnator sealer to protect the surface from spills and stains.
Operation Safety and Criteria
The Civic Center is a large area that has a great deal of foot and vehicle traffic at any
given time during the day or night. Keeping this in mind, it is very important to keep the
safety of the public and our cleaning crew a top priority.
At the beginning of each cleaning operation, our technician will lay out appropriate
signage in strategic areas to inform the public of our presence. This is intended to keep
them away from our cleaning operation. If a situation arises where the technician is
I
