CITY OF SANTA ANA
ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES I TRAFFIC
MAY 21, 2007
TRAFFIC CALMING
We recognize the need to balance the mobility needs of the region with the quality of life needs of
the community and residents. When addressing the functional and aesthetic needs of municipal
road corridors, and the competing needs of automobiles and pedestrians, Kimley-Horn's team
emphasizes a wide variety of traffic calming principles, including:
Narrowed lane widths that serve to slow traffic and reduce the overall street width —while
providing safer pedestrian crossings
Heavily landscaped medians that reduce the appearance of expansive paving, help slow traffic,
lower the number of accidents, and promote pedestrian safety through the provision of median
"refuges" at crosswalk locations
Raised intersections (or "speed tables"), equal to the elevation of the sidewalk, that redefine the
road as a "pedestrian area through which traffic must pass" vs. traditional intersections that are
clearly "vehicular spaces through which pedestrians and bicyclists must pass". Such
intersection designs often incorporate special paving designs to further reinforce their presence
and importance.
TRAFFIC ENGINEERING Kimley-Horn has provided traffic
Kimley-Horn offers complete in-house traffic engineering studies and designs for morethan 20,000 sites nationwide.
u services in the areas of signal system design; interconnect, Our services include:
timing plans, and intersection design; signing and striping Traffic forecasting
S plans; speed zoning studies; safety and operations studies; Traffic counts
jaccident analysis; pedestrian safety programs; innovative - Traffic impact analyses
parking, access, and circulation studies; and general Safety studies
consultation in traffic engineering. We have remained at the forefront of transportation technology for nearly four decades. Our
work in this area includes feasibility studies, plans and specifications, software development, and
construction engineering and inspection. We have planned, designed, and implemented high-
technology systems and control centers with networked computer systems, closed-circuit television
cameras, monitors, and variable message signs; large-scale video and graphical user interfaces;
dial -up traveler information systems; automated emergency dispatching; computer -generated voice
messaging; and links with other traffic signal control centers.
TL770071.07 - q -
Copyright © 2006, Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc.
