Our Procedures with Explanations: <br />Detailed Medical HiFt and Phvsica /; A complete medical examination by a <br />board - certified physician. A complete medical history including height, weight, resting <br />blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration rate will be taken. <br />ScreeningAud /ometrvc Tests hearing from 500 to 8,000 Htz levels utilizing a <br />hearing booth (Audiometry). Per new regulations a hearing booth or Audiometric <br />Device is now required. Also required are comparisons with previous year's tests. <br />ChestX -Rap; This is performed annually and a board - certified Pulmonologist <br />interprets the x -rays. We also have the x -rays "second read" to assure accuracy. Since <br />firefighters /hazardous materials workers fall within a high risk group for inhalation <br />exposures, we perform x -rays yearly. Required by regulations are comparisons with <br />previous year's x -ray films. <br />Pulmonary Function Test.- Including Spirometry, Flow Volume Loop, Maximum <br />Voluntary Ventilation, and Diffusing Capacity. The tests are an excellent way to screen <br />for possible lung disease by testing both airways and lung tissue. The diffusing <br />capacity test is not required specifically, however in determining many possible lung <br />diseases mentioned in the standard, a diffusing capacity is the test needed for those <br />possibilities. The technician who performs the spirometry must be NIOSH certified. <br />Spirometry must be performed in accordance with ATS (American Thoracic Society) <br />Standard. <br />Colon Cancer Screen: This is performed by the "Hemoccult" method. <br />Comprehensive Blood Ana /ysis; Includes a lipid (cholesterol) panel; biochemical <br />profile; thyroid panel; complete blood count. <br />Urinalysis: Self- explanatory <br />Prostate SpecificAn&en (PSA, To screen for possible prostate cancer. <br />Grip Strength•• Self- explanatory <br />Graded Treadmill Stress Test with Metabo /im Includes oximetry for oxygen <br />saturation to rule out hypoxemia. This is a new requirement with NFPA. The stress <br />test is potentially diagnostic for heart disease. A Bruce Protocol is utilized. Metabolic <br />testing reveals the inter - relationship of heart and lungs working in tandem. It also <br />provides fitness measurements. The new standard states than an evaluation of aerobic <br />capacity shall be conducted using a treadmill protocol. To measure aerobic capacity, <br />the firefighter breathes into a computer while walking on a treadmill. The computer <br />measures how well the muscles metabolize oxygen. This in turn gives us aerobic <br />
