The Learning Center contains three components that are based on best practices. These
components, supported by Teen Challenge staff as well as volunteer tutors and mentors, gives each participant the
opportunity to not only succeed in school but also in life. The components include: (1) An education component that
provides tutoring and homework assistance to improve school performance and behavior. Trained volunteer tutors,
following a structure curriculum, provide assistance in one or more of the following subject areas: language arts,
math, history, social studies, and science. Special emphasis is paced upon computer science and technology with
technologically enhanced learning resources and tools. (2) An educational enrichment compenent, supported by
volunteer mentors, offers opportunities for participation in recreational activities and cultural events, and perhaps
just as important is the time a mentor invests in a child or young person. The activities in this component might
involve art, music, sports and general recreation, church and community service, and other youth development
activities based on the student's needs and interest. And finally, (3) a social formation component that incorporates
community and family involvement both as partners and focal points. Services Provided include: 1) After School
Care 2) Tutoring 3) Mentoring 4) Exposure to technology 5) Educational enrichment activities 6) Family building
activities and 7) Leadership skills training. As indicated in the exhibits that follow and in our 2008-2009 proposal,
CDBG funds will be usd for supplies, transportation, insurance and conference (staff training) meetings. Un-
duplicated number of youth served has been modified from our original application to reflect counting errors
experienced during the 2007/2008 grant cycle.
