Description of Work - In the space below, describe the program to be funded during the 12 -month contract period. What specific activities will be undertaken during the contract period. Please be concise in your response. Only the viewable space will print. Peso Saludable at Spectrum will consist of an 8 -week nutrition curriculum for the participating children and their families on how to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, coupled with after-school exercise classes and physical activities for participants twice per week. Parents will participate in workshops on topics such as discipline in the home, family communication, and community organizing to advocate for open space. Also, children who are overweight and their parents will meet with a registered dietician. Their involvement will include a year-long follow-up process that includes home visits and monthly phone calls to track the child's improvements. A critical component of the program is giving these children a chance to engage in supervised physical activity. Parents in the program are trained on how to coordinate these activities so that the children have on-going opportunities to engage in physical activity after their participation in the program ends. Currently, LHA coordinates weekly neighborhood exercise sessions for children who have either graduated from the program or who are on the waiting list for the program. Every week, LHA staff work with parents to create and maintain a parent co-op. The co-op plans physical activities, such as soccer games, and parents take turns leading the activities. Finally, the families at Spectrum will have the opportunity to participate in the planning of what will be the first and only community center and park in the area. At the community center, families trained in the program will implement educational activities focusing on healthy eating and active living for other families living in the complex regardless of the weight of their children. LHA will also help to organize a group of parents to discuss the planning of the park's recreational activities to engage other residents in active living.
