<br />WORK STUDY SESSION <br /> <br />W.SA <br /> <br />PROPOSED YMCA FACILITY AT ALTON AVENUE AND RAITT STREET <br />- JOHN VOGET, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SANTA ANA YMCA <br /> <br />John Voget, Executive Director, briefed the City Council on the plans for a <br />new Russ and Kathy Van Cleve YMCA which will provide opportunities <br />and positive change for children and families of the community. A few <br />highlights of this presentation are as follows: <br />o Capital campaign goal for total development of the project which <br />includes an aquatic facility at Segerstrom High School is $23 million; of <br />this amount, $18 million has been raised. <br />o Over 12,000 children and teens live within walking distance of the <br />proposed facility. <br />o Eight K-12 schools are within 1.5 miles. <br />o 80,000 youth under the age of 18 are within three miles. <br />o The population in the community experiences higher than average <br />rates of obesity, asthma and teen pregnancy. <br />o Santa Ana needs more public pools, community centers and safe, <br />open spaces for children to play and exercise to stay healthy. <br />o The first floor of the facility will include a child zone, learning center, <br />and administrative offices. <br />o The second floor will include fitness facilities and health and wellness <br />center. <br />o In addition to the Olympic pool, the outdoor recreational facility will <br />include a speed soccer arena. <br /> <br />Following the presentation Councilmembers thanked Mr. Voget for the <br />update on the project and noted that the new YMCA will be a wonderful <br />asset to the City. Councilmembers also pledged their support in assisting <br />the Santa Ana YMCA in its fundraising efforts. <br /> <br />PUBLIC COMMENTS ON ISSUES OF PUBLIC INTEREST <br /> <br />Michael Stiger and Delante Bess addressed the Council relative to the LaRouche <br />Economic initiative. <br /> <br />CITY MANAGER AND COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> <br />90A CITY MANAGER'S COMMENTS - None <br /> <br />90.B. CITY COUNCILMEMBER COMMENTS <br /> <br />Council member Tinaiero <br />.
