CHAPTER 1 G -BICYCLE SUPPORT FACILITIES GUIDELINES <br />Chapter 16 <br />Bikeway Support <br />Facilities Guidelines <br />16.1 INTRODUCTION <br />The Bicycle Support Facilities <br />Guidelines are intended to assist site <br />designers and developers <br />implementing the City's goals to <br />encourage alternative modes of <br />transportation, improve air quality, <br />reduce greenhouse gas emissions, <br />and improve health and physical <br />fitness for residents. This Chapter <br />provides guidance for including <br />bicycle parking to support sustainable <br />development practices throughout <br />Santa Ana. <br />While short term bicycle parking (bike <br />post or rack) are more common, <br />opportunities for long term bike <br />parking (bike lockers) are also <br />encouraged, as appropriate. <br />Figure I6-1: Example of "Wave" bike rack <br />providing t'ive bicycle parking spaces. <br />16.Z GENERAL DESIGN OBJECTIVES <br />The objectives of these guidelines are <br />to encourage well designed <br />development with appropriate site <br />amenities to support traveling by <br />bicycle, that: <br />^ Provides bicycle parking at <br />popular destinations, key <br />activity locations, attractions <br />and other points of interest. <br />^ Incorporates bicycle parking in <br />the design of new and <br />rehabilitated development <br />projects. <br />^ Includes site furniture, such as <br />bicycle racks and lockers that <br />complement the aesthetic <br />character of the site. <br />16.3 SITE PLANNING, COMPATIBILITY & <br />LOT DESIGN <br />Bicycle parking should be located as <br />close as possible to the main <br />entrance of the building.
