a. TALLER SAN JOSE
1 STIUSEPHS 90A63NUP
May 24, 2010
Ms. Sylvia Vazquez
Workforce Investment Board
1000 E. Santa Ana Blvd. #200
Santa Ana, CA 92701
Dear Sylvia,
Taller San Jose requests an additional $37,066 in funding to provide a total of 5 more out-of-school Santa Ana
youth with the job -training and support services that they need to find and retain living -wage employment.
Taller San Jose expects to recruit 23 youth and to maintain an 86% retention rate, ultimately giving 20 youth the
skills needed to become self-reliant adults.
Taller San Jose's total funding request is $168,759.
With this additional funding, Taller San Jose will provide highly -focused job training in construction, office
careers or medical careers to a total of 20 marginalized youth between the ages of 18 and 21. Taller San Jose's
paid training programs ($100/week) are short term (16 weeks) and simulate the workforce. Candidates for
training are interviewed, possess right-to-work documents, must pass a drug screen, are required to comply with
uniform standards and are expected to be present daily and on time. Students who are not capable of meeting
expectations and requirements are dropped from the program. Those who complete the 16 -week training are
certified in identified skills and have demonstrated stable, work -ready behavior. The training model for each of
the job training tracks focuses on three key areas: Hard Skills Development — work experience, Employability
Development —job preparation, and Life Skills Development — on-going personal development. Taller San
Jose links graduates to employment and provides up to 24 months of comprehensive follow-up services,
including case management and mentoring, job preparation workshops and supplemental training.
Specific changes to the budget include: 1) the costs of stipends for an additional 5 youth; 2) the inclusion of
15% of the salary of a Job Coach and 20% of the salary of the OCA case manager; and, 3) corresponding
increases in the amounts of time allocated for previously included staff.
Thank you for considering this request for additional funding to provide job training and support services to 5
more out-of-school Santa Ana youth. Please contact me at 714-543-5105, x112 if you need more information.
Sincerely,
Christa Sheehan
Director of Advancement
EXHIBIT A
