Zuniga, Diana
From: Gay Olivos <
Sent: Tuesday, June 17, 2025 4:24 PM
To: eComment
Subject: City of Santa Ana - ICE/ Sanctuary City/ Kudos to Mayor Amezcua
Attention: This email originated from outside of City of Santa Ana.Use caution when opening attachments or links.
Good evening Mayor Amezcua and Council Members:
I truly don't know where to begin with this.
I can only affirm -with certainty-that ICE will not go away. They are a federal entity. They are not threatened
by any protests and will use any force as necessary. They have a tyrant commander in chief who oversees
them and directs them as he sees fit. Let us consider what is best for every citizen you represent and not only
the immigrant community.
I heard from a few of you in Social Media along with County Supervisor's and the US House of
Representative(s) and local churches boldly and with a rhetoric of"we stand behind you" - "ICE is breaking up
families" or "we will not stand for this" or "I am sickened by what I saw today of working families". But not
one of you spoke or rather address those citizens who you are also to represent and defend - us the Chicano's
the Mexican American. Those of us who truly stand behind Santa Ana good or bad or indifferent. Those of us
who fought for representation in our public sector. Those of us whose families have been here over 120 years
-fighting for Santa Ana -gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to campaigns whose candidates were people
of color. All of this for the betterment of the city. You have forgotten those who opened doors which you
comfortably sit at today. You have no idea how it was growing up in a white Santa Ana. Trust me, there were
no people of color on any city council more less a Mexican American Mayor until Miguel Pulido
The only person who stood up for us was our Mayor Valerie Amezcua. She made her position fair-she
represents everyone and not just those facing deportation. And that is what an effective leader is supposed to
do. Thank you Mayor for representing everyone you serve.
Not one of you told the protestors to go home and stop the mayhem. You clearly stated they have a 1st
Amendment Right but look at the results, our beautiful city was vandalized. Did you really believe the protests
would be peaceful? And what exactly did you plan to gain from such protests? Do you really believe "standing
behind protesters" was going to legalize illegal immigrants? Did you really believe the president was going to
be intimidated by these actions?Today, he boldly stated that is going after sanctuary cities and we would fall
into that category.
I never thought in my lifetime, I would have tell my eldest grandson Adam -a 5th Generation Olivos -to carry
his California ID at all times; carry your birth certificate; and speak English. Mind you, he is versed in both
English and Spanish - dances Ballet Folklorico but his safety was my first priority. For him to see soldiers with
military gear and guns while going to summer school and Santa Ana High - perpetuated fear. Fear based on his
skin color. Out of my eight grandchildren he looks more Mexican that the others. This is not what we should
be perpetuating in our community. In case you don't know, my Uncle Aaron - my fathers younger brother-
was shot at point blank range on Raitt and First St in Santa Ana by an illegal immigrant. He left a widow and
1
