two children under the age of ten. He volunteered his time and talents as a football coach and baseball coach
and the immigrant community our family served shot him point blank. Are these the illegal immigrants we are
are protecting? Are these the illegal immigrants we are harboring? Think about families who have been
directly affected but yet chose to forgive and remain in this city.
Across the nation, Latino protesters vandalized our buildings, started fires, threatened, wrote vulgarity
remarks towards the authorities all while proudly holding the Mexican flag. Holding a flag for a country they
left for a "better life". Holding a flag for a country they don't want to go home to. Proudly waving the Mexican
flag for the nation to see. Do you really think this helps in any legislation for immigration reform? It only
affirms what the nation perceives of the immigrant communities - unpatriotic which is Trumps propaganda
from the onset. We are dealing with a president who wants to pick a fight - let's not give him one. There are
other ways to protest - use our spending power - stop shopping Amazon, Tesla, Walmart, Goya, McDonalds
and the list goes. I was old enough to remember that when Cesar Chavez was protesting for the campesinos
he told us not to buy grapes - and we didn't. And he won.
I have to ask myself why did we ever agree to make Santa Ana a sanctuary city? I'm leaning towards this
decision being a mistake and in a very arrayed viewpoint it appears as if undocumented immigrants have a
sense of entitlement in a sanctuary city.
As you discuss and review Item 27 from the May 20th meeting, which reads:
27. Discuss and Consider Providing Direction to the City Manager to Develop and Implement a Policy Requiring
Immediate Disclosure of All ICE Courtesy Notifications Received by the Santa Ana Police Department—
Councilmember Hernandez and Mayor Pro Tem Vazquez
Please take into account the recent ugly portrayal of these protests. It did not serve any purpose but rather
encouraged outrage, vulgarity, vandalizm to name a few. To witness young girls holding up posters, chanting
f*LJ ICE and a narrator stating (in Spanish) how proud she was of the youth taking action is disgusting. Are
these these residents we want in our city- I don't. Besides, it seems most already know where ICE will be on
Social Media and do a fine job of informing the illegal immigrant community -they don't need you to
encourage this. Trump will not stop and lets not give him and his administration any more reason to send
troops into our downtown.
Again, thank you Mayor Amezcua. You are the only one who came to our defense.
I do not if I will make to today's meeting - I have coaches meeting at Jerome at the same time but I wanted to
incorporate my statement in to the records. .
Respectfully,
Gay Olivos
Ward 5
z
