CITY OF SANT A ANA
SUFK OC trained mentors serve as a guide throughout the mentoring program. They provide each yo uth a
s table, healthy, tlusting, adult relations hip. In addition, th ey help the yo uth establish personal goals,
overcome obstacles , id entify and build on the ir strengths and obtain the se lf-confidence needed to maintain
a productive life. We be li eve that the key to our success is the relationship developed between the youth
and their adult mentor. The mentor pro vides the youth direction, suppo1t, encouragement, and
accountability while the youth develops a sense of competence, us efulness, belonging, and empowe1ment.
Over the past 21 years, the JTS/RMTS cmriculum and mentor model , ha s proven su ccess ful in helping
thousands of at-risk O C youth gain ind ependence. Notably, the JTS cwTiculum and mentor model is being
adopted county-wide in OC for use with transition-aged yo uth (TAY) (16-24 yea rs old) expe1iencing
homelessness.
We serve exclusively youth a s their needs are unique compared to adults . They typically have little life
exp eri ence, no work expe1ience, limited education, and recent trauma. Last ye ar, 38% of youth we
rep01ted mental health problems, including depression , anxi ety disord ers, PTSD, suicidal ideatio n, and
substance addiction. 14% had dmg or alcohol abuse issues and 26% rep01ted being subject to domestic
violence. 27% had children, and 22% were in foster care. Over half of the girls we served exp e1ien ced
human trafficking, rape, and/or pregnancy.
We prov id e suppo1t for all youth facin g challen ges such as trauma, addiction, behavioral issues and mental
hea lth challenges. SUFK OC staff and volunteers receive continuou s training in order to provide the most
comprehensive care po ssibl e and en sure the use of best practices. Training includes cris is intervention,
trauma-inf01med care, adverse childhood expe1iences, implic it bi as identification, m enta l/behavioral
health, positive youth development, social-emotional learning, coping strategies and haim-reduction
education. In addition, w e maintain an extensive refetTal network for youth needing spec ial care for
addiction recove ry, behavioral issues, and mental health disorders. In th ese situations, we will prov ide a
soft handoff to the provider and in some cases, cover the yo uth 's healthcare expenses, as n ee ded .
Through coordinated training and collaboration w ith om refe1rnl paitners, we are able to address the
unique n eeds of many subpopulations of youth wh o ai·e expe1ienc ing homelessness, have mnaway, or ai·e
at-1i sk, including, but not limited to the following: 1) yo uth who are pregnant o r parenting; 2) system-
involved yo uth, to include juvenile justice and c hild welfare; 3) labor and/or sexually trafficked or
exploited youth; 4) youth with addictions and substance abuse issu es, 5) youth w ith mental di sorders; and
6) other vulnerab le populations (e.g., ttibal youth, LGBTQIA2S +, and youth with disabili ties).
