continue to accumulate one (1) day of sick leave for each full calendar month <br /> of service for which he or she is employed by the City with full pay during <br /> said absence for service-connected illness or injury. <br /> C. Authorized Only When Necessary. Use of sick leave by City <br /> employees shall be authorized as follows: <br /> (1) Sick leave is not a right which an employee may use at his <br /> or her discretion, but shall be allowed only in cases of necessity and actual <br /> sickness or disability, or as authorized in subsection "J" below. <br /> (2) With respect to "miscellaneous-member" employees covered <br /> by this Agreement, when such an employee's absence is caused by an industrial <br /> illness or injury, for which benefits are required to be provided under the <br /> State Workers' Compensation Insurance and Safety Act, the City shall pay 100% <br /> of salary for the first three (3) days of such absence and sick leave shall <br /> not be debited. <br /> D. Limit. The maximum total accumulation of sick leave with pay <br /> shall be two hundred (200) working days. Sick leave usage of less than a full <br /> day shall be charged in minimum increments of one (1 ) hour, with fractional <br /> usage rounded upward to the next higher multiple of one (1 ). <br /> E. $xtended.. The City Manager may grant leave up to six months <br /> without pay to an employee who has exhausted all of his or her accrued sick <br /> leave if the City physician or a licensed physician designated by the City <br /> Manager indicates that the employee will be sufficiently reoovered to return <br /> to his or her employment within a six (6) months' period. Prior to the <br /> expiration of the additional time, the employee may return to his or her <br /> position provided that he or she has a certificate from one of the above <br /> mentioned physicians stating that the employee is able to perform all the <br /> duties of his or her position without qualification. In addition to the <br /> above, the City Manager may grant a further extension not to exceed a total of <br /> one (1 ) year without pay. <br /> F. Extension bylse of Vacation. After an employee's sick leave <br /> has been exhausted he may be granted permission to take any earned vacation <br /> he may have accrued. <br /> G. Notice. The employee taking sick leave shall notify his or her <br /> immediate supervisor not less than one (1 ) hour prior to the time he or she is <br /> scheduled to report for duty. When the absence is more than three (3) <br /> consecutive working days, the employee must present to his or her department <br /> head a physician's certificate stating the cause of illness and that, in the <br /> physician's opinion, the employee could not report to work because of such <br /> illness or injury and that the employee is sufficiently recovered to safely <br /> return to work. Such certificate shall be transmitted to the chief personnel <br /> officer with the report of the return of the employee to work. <br /> A physician's certificate or other satisfactory written evidence of <br /> actual illness or injury may be required after an absence of any duration less <br /> than three (3) days. <br /> H. Denial. No employee shall be entitled to sick leave with pay <br /> while absent from duty because of sickness or injury purposely self-inflicted <br /> 20 <br />
