4. VARIANCE NO. 2006-14 <br />Filed by Caribou Industries, to obtain a variance from the sign code for Original Mike's <br />restaurant and allow an additional wall sign on the north elevation at 100 South Main <br />Street. <br />PUBLISHED IN THE ORANGE COUNTY REPORTER: November 17, 2006 <br />PUBLICLY NOTICED: November 17, 2006 <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />Adopt a resolution denying Variance No. 2006-14. <br />Vince Fregoso, Senior Planner, presented the staff report and recommendation. <br />The public hearing was opened. <br />William Beaubeaux of Caribou Industries noted the need for identification for the <br />Original Mike's Restaurant on the north side of the building which would also <br />designate the entrance into downtown, noting the high-quality sign and noted they <br />would remove the painted sign on the west side. <br />Debbie McEwen noted concern on the damage that would be done to the brick <br />facade of the historic building with holes drilled in order to install sign and noted <br />there is sufficient signage on the building. <br />The public hearing was closed. <br />Discussion ensued on the signage on the building, potential damage to the building, <br />ways to install the sign without further damage, future use of building, status of the <br />billboard and unpermitted sign, the consistency of approving variances and the <br />proliferation of signs. <br />MOTION: Continue item to December 11, 2006 meeting with the following <br />issues to be resolved: <br />1. Investigate whatever damage may be caused by attaching the <br />sign to the building and look at possible ways to attach in a <br />historically sensitive manner if possible <br />2. Explore the removal of existing signage, including the Artists <br />Lofts can sign, the unpermitted sign and any other superfluous <br />signs <br />3. Review the length of the facade to determine if additional <br />signage would be appropriate as proposed <br />4. Public Comments (for items not on the agenda) <br />Glen Stroud encouraged Commissioners to meet their newly elected <br />Councilmember in the ward they represent and share with them their support of <br />the council retreat held two years ago with the retreat concept and also share <br />with them their concerns on the Planning Commission, vision and goals. Mr. <br />Stroud also requested that Commission direct staff to place which ward the <br />Commissioners represent on the cover of the Planning Commission agenda. <br />6.
