Mojave River Bridge on Route 18. Hill performed assistant structures
representative/structures inspection for the Mojave River Bridge on Route 18.
The bridge crosses a major busy railroad track. The bridge comprises five spans
136.4 meters long and 22.5 meters wide. The structural retrofit consisted of
adding a Seismic Anchor slab at both abutments 1 and 7 on top of 18 CIDH piles
of 750 mm diameter and four meters deep to add a stiffness to the structure
for the longitudinal seismic responses. The seismic transverse response retrofit
included adding steel braced frame at each of five piers at the Mojave River.
The project required stage construction to accommodate traffic, and closing
lanes and switching traffic twice a day was necessary to accommodate the
motorists traveling each way at different critical times of the day.
Caltrans On Call Structures Inspection j
I Los Angeles County, CA
Hill (TCM Group), as a subconsultant, provided qualified and trained
structure representatives and assistant structure representative
services, including but not limited to: structure construction inspection,
quality calculations, checking grade and alignment, materials sampling
and ensuring compliance with project plans and sections. This included
preparing progress estimates, change orders, daily reports, filing,
and drafting correspondence. Our personnel reviewed and inspected
traffic control systems for lane closures and worked on various shifts to
fulfill the contract needs. We identified actual and potential problems
associated with the construction project work and recommended
sound engineering solutions in a timely manner. We maintained an
awareness of safety and health requirements and enforced applicable
regulations and contract provisions for the protection of the public
and project personnel. We prepared calculations; records; reports; and
correspondence related to project activities, contract change orders,
and claims issues. We performed structural analysis and review of
working drawing submittals. These submittals included shop details,
erection plans, falsework drawings, shoring plans, and temporary
support system drawings. Our staff also provided inspection services,
including preparing and processing all documentation required.
District 59 Statewide Projects included:
SR-60 HOV, various bridges, Garfield Avenue Undercrossing, litter removal
system, SR-210/Grand Avenue bridges and sound walls in Pasadena, and SR-
210/Huntington Drive structure modifications for a CCTV system in Arcadia.
Service
Structures Inspection
Reference
Ching Chau, PE, Senior Bridge Eng.
Caltrans District 59
951.232.6000
Service
Structures Inspection
Personnel Involved
Gary Cavafian, PE, Structure Rep.
Mazen Aljazzar, Structures Inspector
Reference
Peter Lim, Project Manager
LAN Engineering (AECOM)
949.293.6282
h111LL City of Santa Ana Public Works Agency
First Street Bridge Replacement I Construction Management Page 13
Client
Caltrans District 59
