Because of overlapping <br />definitions, all statutory rapists also appear under the column "child molesters." <br />'Because of missing data, prisoners released in Ohio were <br />excluded from the calculation of percent reconvicted. <br />"'New sentence" includes new sentences to State or Federal prisons <br />but not to local jails. Because of missing data, prisoners released in Ohio <br />and Virginia were excluded from the calculation of percentage returned to prison <br />with a new sentence. <br />Child molesters and statutory rapists <br />Of the 4,295 released child molesters, <br />1,693 (39.4 %) were rearrested during <br />the 3 -year followup period (table 10). <br />The majority of those charged (approxi- <br />mately 982 of the 1,693, or 58 %) were <br />charged in the first 12 months. While <br />49.9% of released statutory rapists <br />were rearrested within 3 years, nearly <br />three -fifths of those rearrests occurred <br />within the first year following release <br />(29.8% / 49.9% = 60 %). <br />Recidivism of Sex Offenders Released from Prison in 1994 17 <br />
