Data identifying race were reported for <br />98.5 %; Hispanic origin for 82.5 %; age for virtually <br />100 %. <br />Demographic characteristics <br />All sex offenders <br />Race Black men (56.1 %) released in <br />1994 were more likely than white men <br />(36.7 %) to be rearrested for a new <br />crime (not limited to just a new sex <br />crime) within the first 3 years following <br />their release (table 11). <br />Hispanic origin Among released sex <br />offenders, non - Hispanics (45.9 %) were <br />more likely than Hispanics (42.2 %) to <br />have a new arrest within the 3 -year <br />followup period. <br />Age The younger the prisoner when <br />released, the higher the rate of recidi- <br />vism. For example, of all the sex <br />offenders under age 25 at the time of <br />discharge from prison, 59.8% were <br />Table 13. Data identifying race <br />were reported for 98.5 %; Hispanic origin for <br />82.5 %; age for virtually 100 %. <br />rearrested for some type of crime <br />within 3 years, or more than double the <br />23.5% of those age 45 or older. <br />Rapists and sexual assaulters <br />Race Among releasees whose impris- <br />onment offense was sexual assault, <br />57% of black men and 35.8% of white <br />men were rearrested for all types of <br />crimes. A higher rearrest rate for <br />blacks was also found among released <br />rapists. <br />Hispanic origin Among released <br />rapists, non - Hispanics (50.2 %) were <br />more likely than Hispanics (47.7 %) to <br />be rearrested within the 3 -year followup <br />period. The same was true among <br />released prisoners whose imprison- <br />ment offense was sexual assault. <br />Age For both rapists and sexual <br />assaulters, younger releasees had <br />higher rearrest rates than older <br />releasees. <br />
