August 27, 2014 Bowers Museum, SSA Project #14048
qTflr s
SALLY SWANSON
ARCH"ECTS, INC
As noted in the section above, there are certain elements that are common to access of a building or
facility by a disabled individual that are known as the "building blocks" of accessibility. The elements
are part of those items that a disabled person encounters in the "approachability" of whatever they
are attempting to access that may include, but are not limited to, approaching a door, an ATM device,
an accessible parking space or a ramp. The items may allow, inhibit or altogether prohibit access by
a disabled individual when designed and /or constructed incorrectly and thus become an
architectural barrier to the user in and of them. Such universal elements for access include but, are
not limited to, the items as listed below:
➢ Floor or Ground Conditions
➢ Changes in Level
➢ Turning and Maneuvering Spaces
➢ Clear Spaces
➢ Knee and Toe Spaces
➢ Protruding Objects
➢ Hazards
➢ Reach Ranges
➢ Operable Parts
August 27, 2014 SSA Project #14048 Page 15 of 28
