This is an interesting
initiative since non-governmental flags typically are not flown on governmental
properties. While some might consider it a popular idea to show support for the Gay and
Lesbian community, I might suggest also including an MIA flag to show our commitment not to
forget those still missing in action. A Boy Scout and Girl Scout flag probably should also be
included; they certainly would not be controversial and are honorable organizations worthy of
our support. There are no doubt far more Santa Ana citizens represented by AFL-CIO than the
Gay Pride flag. Therefore an ATFL -CIO flag probably should be included on our city's flag
poles. Rotary and/or Elks flags should be flown to show our support and appreciation of the
many services these organizations have provided to the citizens of Santa Ana. Hey, who would)
object to us including an Angels and Ducks flags!
Wait a minute! How tall is this flag pole, or how many poles are there? Who's idea was it to
start flying special interest flags over government buildings? I thought the Confederate Flag
debate in South Carolina taught us that flags flown on government buildings ought not to be in
preference or exclusion of one group or another. Does the fact that the son of one of our
councilmen is gay justify why we would consider starting such a tradition at this point? The
only flags flown over our Santa Ana City Hall should be the flags of The United States of
America, The State of California, The County of Orange, and The City of Santa Ana; all
government agencies under which we reside.
If Councilman Tinajero would Iliike to show support for his gay son, he should fly the rainbow
flag in front of his own house; not ask his neighbors to fly it, or ask that it be flown over the
house of our city.
Gilbert Bailey
Santa Ana resident
