q OC CHILDR_EN'S
THERAPEUTIC ARTS
2215 North Broadway Santa Ana, CA. 92706 (714) 547 - 5468 www.occtac.org
OCCTAC proposes to host a 3 -film series at Santa Ana's Frida Cinema as a means of providing
an introduction to both classical and contemporary music through Latino films highlighting the
importance and relevance of music and the arts in general for community members with little or
no exposure to the genre(s). OCCTAC proposes to screen these films to demonstrating to
community members that there are opportunities for them to learn to play an instrument, be
active audience members, or both. The three films OCCTAC has selected are El Sistema (The
System), the story of the Venezuelan network of children's and youth orchestras which produced
talents such as conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the double bass player Edicson Ruiz, who at age
17 became the youngest musician ever to join the Berlin Philharmonic; Landfill Philharmonic, a
documentary about the transformative power of music told through the lives of a garbage picker,
a music teacher and a group of children from a Paraguayan slum that out of necessity started
creating instalments entirely out of garbage; and Hecho en Mexico (Made in Mexico), which
showcases the richness of Mexican music and artistry through poets, singers, actors and cultural
leaders speaking about their craft, their homeland and what it meais to be Mexican. Films will
be screened on the first weekend(s) of September, October, and November, respectively. The
'3n
screening of El Sistema will be the kickoff event and will include performances by OCCTAC
students and an introduction by Chamber Music OC. The series will close with the film Hecho
en Mexico which will screen during Santa Ana's annual Noche de Allures and. will include music
performances by OCCTAC's harp program students and offer free tacos for movie attendees.
Is this a new or existing program/project? The proposed project is an expansion of an existing
program. OCCTAC currently has various music classes and is working towards a goal of
implementing an "Et Sistema," styled music curriculum through a partnership with Chamber
