q OC CHILDR_EN'S <br />THERAPEUTIC ARTS <br />2215 North Broadway Santa Ana, CA. 92706 (714) 547 - 5468 www.occtac.org <br />OCCTAC proposes to host a 3 -film series at Santa Ana's Frida Cinema as a means of providing <br />an introduction to both classical and contemporary music through Latino films highlighting the <br />importance and relevance of music and the arts in general for community members with little or <br />no exposure to the genre(s). OCCTAC proposes to screen these films to demonstrating to <br />community members that there are opportunities for them to learn to play an instrument, be <br />active audience members, or both. The three films OCCTAC has selected are El Sistema (The <br />System), the story of the Venezuelan network of children's and youth orchestras which produced <br />talents such as conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the double bass player Edicson Ruiz, who at age <br />17 became the youngest musician ever to join the Berlin Philharmonic; Landfill Philharmonic, a <br />documentary about the transformative power of music told through the lives of a garbage picker, <br />a music teacher and a group of children from a Paraguayan slum that out of necessity started <br />creating instalments entirely out of garbage; and Hecho en Mexico (Made in Mexico), which <br />showcases the richness of Mexican music and artistry through poets, singers, actors and cultural <br />leaders speaking about their craft, their homeland and what it meais to be Mexican. Films will <br />be screened on the first weekend(s) of September, October, and November, respectively. The <br />'3n <br />screening of El Sistema will be the kickoff event and will include performances by OCCTAC <br />students and an introduction by Chamber Music OC. The series will close with the film Hecho <br />en Mexico which will screen during Santa Ana's annual Noche de Allures and. will include music <br />performances by OCCTAC's harp program students and offer free tacos for movie attendees. <br />Is this a new or existing program/project? The proposed project is an expansion of an existing <br />program. OCCTAC currently has various music classes and is working towards a goal of <br />implementing an "Et Sistema," styled music curriculum through a partnership with Chamber <br />
