Artist based in Santa Ana
Need::
$5000
I am applying for::
Equipment, Materials & Supply
If other please state below::
n/a
Artist Statement:
In fifth grade my teacher called me to her desk. I was scared. This wasn't the first time.
To my disbelief she requested that I write our class a play. A WHAT!? She explained
what it was, gave me tools, advice, a few historical topics to consider, a deadline and
then sent me to the library. I walked away even more terrified. A week later I had a
VERY rough draft of a so called three -act play. It was based on my interpretation of the
Patuxet tribes' perspective of Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims. My teacher took some
heat but, as promised, she produced it and said, "You're a storyteller. This is just one
step to finding your voice."
That was one of the most intimidating and challenging things I did in my fifth grade life. I
absolutely loved it!
I am a storyteller who, like my teacher, recognizes the opportunities and invaluable
moments to create meaningful experiences through theatre. I truly look to my
community to continue this work. Recently, I had the great honor of leading South Coast
Repertory's Dialogos /Dialogue two -year bilingual theatre - making project with the Santa
Ana Community. It was incredible to see and hear the stories of my community and
even more so to see the community be the ones to tell it! This immersive project and
play was a first of its kind. It profoundly connected so many voices, people, places,
stories, art forms, histories, languages, challenges and perceptions of a community who
is so diverse, complex and full of heart. I want to continue to provide theatre - making
opportunities to my community through playwriting. What theatre can offer can make a
difference in life of one to the very many. I hope by leading this next humble storytelling
venture will continue to strengthen and value the existing richness in arts and culture. I
have faith with the work and artists I lead, through theatre, ripples into endless
possibilities for my community.
Narrative for proposed use of funds::
I am looking to utilize funding to help supplement the cost and to sustain the project.
To use in four areas:
1. Social Media, website and maintenance
2.Sound equipment rental
3. Travel and parking expenses to professional
Teaching Artists who are donating their time to teach workshops.
Monies to cover large poster printing for posters
4. Rental fees / Staffing fees for spaces to host us workshops
