The Creative Workfare <br />Goal: Create the conditions in which artists and creeatives thrive professionally and arts and <br />cultural organizations have the resources required jor sustained success. <br />Santa Ana is a hub of creativity and innovation. Fueled by entrepreneurial energy, deep pride of <br />place, and a "can -do" spirit of community and collaboration, a creative workforce has found a <br />home in Santa Ana. This is evidenced recently by the many start-ups in the city. Creative <br />entrepreneurs find connections with one another and describe the city as "a hub of culinary <br />innovation," having "an urban feel, kind of like being in downtown LA but smaller," and "a <br />micro -community that creates a place I can be a part of." <br />Students and many adults expressed the desire for clear pathways for themselves to build <br />careers in Santa Ana's creative sector. There are many programs available through local <br />colleges to support either career reinvention for those who have been displaced by the <br />changing economy or are re-entering the workforce. Partnerships are needed between the <br />creative sector and educational institutions that identify creative career pathways and provide <br />assistance with navigating them, as well as increasing local knowledge of available <br />professional development and training programs. Such partnerships can support greater local <br />economic and job growth in the creative sector. <br />Additionally, discussion group participants spoke of the need for mentoring programs that can <br />connect experienced creative entrepreneurs with those who are just starting out. This was <br />especially true in the culinary professionals' discussion group where participants related the <br />challenges of starting a restaurant or other culinary enterprise. <br />While there are small business development support programs through the Small Business <br />Administration and SCORE, for example, several of those that have successfully launched <br />creative businesses found that their business development needs were somewhat different <br />than those in other professions.
