I was nervous and scared. This would
not be the first time I was called. However, to my disbelief she requested that I write our
class a play. A what? She explained what it was, gave me some tools, advice, offered a
few historical topics to consider, a deadline and then sent me to the library for research.
I walked away relieved but not completely.
One week later I had a very VERY rough draft of a so called two -act play that included
roles for all of my twenty -seven classmates. The play was based on an interpretation of
the Patuxet peoples' perspective of Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims. I don't believe our
principal was completely thrilled but, as promised, my teacher proudly produced my
play. I remember asking, "why me ?" and her response, "You're a storyteller, Sara. This
is just one step to help you find your voice."
This was one of the scariest and challenging things I did in my fifth grade life. And, I
absolutely loved it! Theatre has had a profound hold on me. I am confident, creative,
compassionate, ardent, innovative and collaborative in work and in life. Much like my
teacher, I want to provide and share these opportunities to my community, too.
Narrative for proposed use of funds::
Funds will be used to support the workshop, participants and artists.
For Workshop: marketing materials, social media, newsletter, flyers, administrative
support to planning and preparation for the actual workshop, a laptop and printer for
office support and printing access at office space in GCAC
For Participants: microphone, stand and mic for the use of shared readings, printer
