over thirty performances bringing both local and international artists to the stage.
Performances include both professional guest artists, as well as major local artists,
community arts organizations, students, and children. In the months preceding each
festival, el Centro conducts FREE interactive art and educational workshops to develop
visual, literary and performing art works to be presented during each main festival.
Supplemental Question 4::
There is no other non-commercial, community-based festival that reaches the number
of Santa Ana residents and community artists as Noche de Altares. At least 40,000
people have the opportunity to participate, organize, and engage in Noche de Altares.
Over 100 community-based artists --including students, families, and community
organizations --participate in art making through the creation of an altar, flower -making,
sugar skull painting, and other forms of cultural production. This intra -cultural
community celebration targets families from Santa Ana and engages diverse residents
from throughout Orange County. Survey results from 2012 for our celebrations, showed
that although 55% of those interviewed participated in three or fewer arts activities
outside the home annually, 92% indicated a desire to find out more information about
local arts activities. This data shows a clear gap in services around art activities.
Celebrations such as Noche de Altares demonstrate a quantifiable increase in access to
culturally relevant education. Furthermore, participants and volunteers also learn certain
applied skills important to cultural industries such as sound, design, and participatory
action research. In addition, a number of nonprofit organizations use the event to exhibit
their work and fundraise for their own projects.
