I am applying for:: <br />Special Events <br />If other please state below:: <br />n/a <br />Organization Mission and History: <br />EI Centro Cultural de Mexico is a nonprofit organization founded in 1994 in Santa Ana, <br />California. By engaging Orange County residents and communities through community <br />outreach efforts, EI Centro supports inter- and intra -cultural exchange and dialogue <br />among residents by creating a variety of programs that enable all people to explore their <br />own heritage and culture. <br />Through educational programing --including workshops in dance, music, art, and <br />literacy --El Centro's mission is to promote an understanding and appreciation of the <br />contribution of the many cultures in our region by sharing knowledge of Mexico's rich, <br />cultural and educational, and social legacy. It helps create spaces in Santa Ana where <br />the community can find cultural, educational, and artistic activities that strengthen their <br />identities and develop a sense of leadership in their community. <br />Narrative for proposed use of funds:: <br />The funds from this grant would be used to pay local, regional, and international artists <br />to perform at Noche de Altares in Santa Ana, California as well as permits and event <br />costs. EI Centro has brought Grammy award winners to Santa Ana various times, <br />including groups such as La Santa Cecilia and Quetzal, and Grammy nominees such as <br />Los Cojolites and Ana Tijoux. In addition, EI Centro also showcases local community <br />performances (in the past, el Centro has included mariachi, ballet folklorico, flamenco, <br />classical music, and poetry slams by the young people of Barrio Writers and by older <br />adults from the Santa Ana Senior Center), and workshops during the previous month <br />(such as Day of the Dead sugar skull making). These funds would also help fund the <br />sound engineer, the generators, the police, the required security, and the fencing to <br />surround the Reagan Federal Building. <br />Supplemental Question 1:: <br />This event requires City of Santa Ana resources that include barricades, business <br />licenses, an event permit, a stage rental, police, and street cleaning. <br />Supplemental Question 2:: <br />EI Centro Cultural de Mexico hosted its first Dia de los Muertos events in 1994, and <br />created Noche de Altares in 2002. By joining forces with businesses including Calacas <br />in 2007, hosting over 100 altars, and increasing the number of participating vendors and <br />nonprofit organizations, Noche de Altares has solidified its commitment to building <br />community partnerships through this tradition in the heart of Santa Ana. <br />Supplemental Question 3:: <br />Taking place outdoors in downtown Santa Ana's historic Calle Cuatro, the FREE <br />day -long Noche de Altares celebration features approximately 100 community altars, <br />
