operations of the department, the department may deny that request. <br />8.5 Incremental Usage. Time off with pay to compensate for overtime worked may be taken <br />in increments as small as one-half (1/2) hour. <br />8.6 Excess Usage. If compensatory time off is used in excess of that available, such excess <br />compensatory time off will first be deducted from any available comp time bank, vacation <br />benefits and finally, deducted from the next scheduled wage or salary payment. <br />8.7 No Effect on Other Benefits. Overtime work shall not apply to the earning of employee <br />benefits (retirement, holidays, vacation accrual, sick leave accrual and employee insurance <br />benefits), toward the completion of probationary period or to progression within a salary <br />rate range. <br />8.8 Overtime Work to be Apportioned. To the extent that he is reasonably able to do so, the <br />Police Chief shall arrange work programs to minimize overtime work; necessary overtime <br />work shall be apportioned among employees of like classification and assignment. <br />8.9 Advance Compensation for Overtime. Time off with pay as compensation for overtime <br />may not be granted or taken in advance of the overtime work for which the time off <br />compensates. Before compensatory time off with pay may be taken, as herein provided, <br />the overtime worked must have been recorded on official payroll records at or about the <br />time the overtime work was performed. In the absence of such recording, no compensatory <br />time off with pay will be permitted. <br />8.10 Compensation for Overtime: Exclusions. Overtime pay or comp time shall be allowed an <br />employee for attendance at conventions, conferences, seminars or the like, as long as prior <br />authorization is received. Overtime pay or comp time pay shall be permitted only for <br />attendance which is ordered on such employee's normal days off or for time beyond a <br />normal workday's duration. Please refer to Santa Ana Police Department Training Bulletin <br />02-07 for details. <br />8.11 Call -Back -Duty. <br />A. Employees who are on call during their off-duty time due to their assignment (i.e., <br />Homicide Investigators, Internal Affairs Sergeants, Crimes Against Persons <br />Sergeants, etc.) and are called back to work will be paid for their travel time at the <br />overtime rate from the time they leave their home until the time they return home, <br />or until their regularly scheduled shift begins. Only that period of time devoted to <br />work will be compensated. <br />B. Employees who are ordered back to work while off-duty because of an emergency <br />or other unforeseen event will be paid for travel time at the overtime rate from the <br />time they leave their home until they return home, or until their regularly scheduled <br />shift begins.
