historic milestone and constructed the largest community center of its kind in Santa
Ana.
In the past the Center housed a cultural museum showcasing unique, hand-crafted
cultural art pieces from the Mexican state of Michoacan as well as exhibits on loan from
universities and other museums. The center lost funding during the recession, resulting
in the closure of the museum. Center leaders used this as an opportunity to transition to
a youth center by providing direct services with a focus on cultural arts. Rather than
display art, the Center became a venue for children and their families to actively engage
in art.
Delhi Center is a 36,848 square foot facility managed by a CEO with the support of 3 full
time and 3 part time staff. Four additional full time staff are directly responsible for
providing grant funded services. Delhi Center offers ESL and computer classes for
adults, after school tutoring, 39 different visual and performing arts, martial arts, and
physical fitness classes per week, and senior services. It is the lead agency for a
Community Building Initiative, training and guiding residents to address community
safety and to make improvements in the neighborhood. The Center also provides HIV
case management and financial stability case management and educational workshops.
Delhi Center generates revenue through its social enterprise activities, including class
fees and facility rentals for public and private events, such as business meetings,
employee events, conferences, art and health resource fairs, wedding receptions, and
quinceaneras. Managing such a large facility with such a small staff is challenging
however through the support of volunteers, interns, and partners, the center serves up
to 300 residents per day and operates approximately 80 hours per week. Through a
combination of social enterprise revenue and grant funding, the center maintains basic
operations but is not in a position to increase programs and services or to provide the
proposed program without grant funding.
Delhi Center's current mission is to advance self-sufficiency through sustainable
programs in health, education, financial stability, and community engagement. The
Delhi Center Summer Arts Camp fulfills the Center's mission by using art to improve
education and health by teaching skills that lead to exploration of educational pursuits in
the arts and by providing opportunities for physical exertion through intense and
challenging performing arts classes.
Narrative for proposed use of funds::
Contracted Instructors
Delhi Center contracts with Active Learning (AL), which was founded in 1999, and is an
award-winning visual and performing arts education company with over 50 professional
instructors.
