Early. growth and development was stimulated by the arrival.of the Southern Pacific! Railroad in 1878 and the Santa'Fe:Railroad in 1886: Following its incorporation as a city in 1886,$anta Ana was recognized as one of the leading. communities in the area in 1889 when it became the seat of the;newly created County of Orange. Santa Ana continued to grow steadily, surviving an economic downturn in the 1890s and, gaining momentum in the first decade of the 20`h century. The older neighborhoods closest to the downtown commercial district and to the churches, clubs, and institutions began to be filled up and homebuilders looked elsewhere for land. This trend outward from the City's historic core was. symbolized by the construction of Santa Ana High School on MainStreet at Tenth Street in 1900 (demolished in the 1940s to make way for the new Buff Department Stare). The Andres House is one of a cluster of homes,fr6m the. first decades of the 20" century that. has survived on'the 1700 block of North Bush Street, north of the'older French Park neighborhood. It is architectural ly significant as,a representative example of the Craftsman style. Characteristic features incorporated in the design include a horizontal emphasis, articulated by the pitch of the gables; strong.horizontal lines of the header molding, and proportions of the frontporch, and a reliance 'on exposed structural elementssuchas.the rafters and braces in the eaves for architectural inierest. Character -defining exterior features of the Andres House, which should be'preserved; include but may not belimited to: roof configuration and treatment (exposed, shaped rafter tails, bargeboards, braces, etc.);'original materials and finishes; open porch configuration and detailing; and original doors and windows.. - - SUMMARY/CONCLUSION: This resource is currently listed in the Santa Ana Register of Historical Property. Itis sighificai : under Criterion l � in that it embodies the "distinguishing characteristics of an architectural style or period.' The Andres House has been categorized as "Key" because it "has a distinctive architectural style and quality" as a. good and intact example of, the Craftsman style, which dominated residential construction: for the first 20 years of,the'20'h century (Municipal Code, Section 30-2.").
