Project No. D-3885-06
Christ Our Savior Catholic Parish
Basin) Fault is a portion of a structural zone up to three miles wide that contains several
mapped faults and anticlinal folds. North-south compression across the Los Angeles
Basin has resulted in discontinuous uplifts along the zone from Newport Beach,
northward to Baldwin Hills. Several of these uplifts have formed faulted anticlinal traps
for the accumulation ofoil and gas, which is being extracted today.
In 1933 the Newport Inglewood Fault ruptured and produced a magnitude 6.3 earthquake
located just off Newport Beach. This was known as the destructive Long Beach
Earthquake. which caused many deaths and major damage to structures. Subsequent to
that 1933 event, there were several smaller earthquakes and numerous minor events along
the fault. No surface rupture of the fault was reported but very strong ground shaking
resulted in lateral spreading and liquefaction at several low lying Iocations within several
miles of the fault trace between Newport and Long Beach.
USGS National Seismic Hazard Maps for Source parameters interactive query has been
used to determine the closest fault to the site within 50 miles and has been tabulated on
Table - I in Appendix D.
U.S.G.S.
