Field moisture <br />content, saturated moisture content, dry unit weight and direct shear strength <br />characteristics were determined from these tests. <br /> <br />Direct Shear <br /> These tests were performed on representative samples of the native soils that <br />were saturated at least 24 hours under a normal load prior to application of the shear <br />load. Each sample was sheared at a constant rate of displacement of 0.05 inches per <br />minute in accordance with the consolidated-undrained shear test procedure.
