The interior of the cone penetrometer is <br />instrumented with strain gauges that allow the simultaneous measurement of cone tip and <br />friction sleeve resistance during penetration. The cone penetration assembly is <br />continuously pushed into the soil by a set of hydraulic rams at a standard rate of 0.8 inch <br />per second while the cone tip resistance and sleeve friction resistance are recorded at <br />approximately every 1-inch and stored in digital form. A specially designed all-wheel drive <br />30-ton truck provides the required reaction weight for pushing the cone assembly. The <br />approximate locations of our subsurface explorations are provided on Figure 3. The boring <br />and CPT logs are provided in Appendix A. <br /> <br />6.1 General Site Soils Conditions <br /> <br />The results of the subsurface investigation indicate that site soils consist of shallow <br />granular fill overlying predominantly medium stiff to stiff layers of finer-grained <br />silts and clays interbedded, with thin layers of silty sands. Boring and CPT results <br />are provided in Appendix A. <br /> <br />6.2 Groundwater <br /> <br />Groundwater was not encountered in either the augured borings or the CPT borings <br />performed which were “pushed” to 50-feet for this investigation. In addition, a <br />review of California Department of Water Resources Groundwater Level records <br />for water wells near to the site indicates that water levels are greater than 40-feet <br />below the surface.
