ECS Pacific, Inc.
Project No. 81:1145

City of Santa Ana Public Library Renovation
26 Civic Center Plaza
Santa Ana, California 92701

COLD FLUID-APPLIED WATERPROOFING

07 1416 - 10

instructions and to recommendations in ASTM C898/C898M.
3.6 PREPARATION OF STEEL
A. All carbon steel surfaces (including penetrations) shall be free of all dirt, oil, grease
spots, rust, and rust residue. Waterproofing shall not be applied over steel that is
blistered or flaking. For primed steel or steel with existing coatings, scarify surface
before coating and apply a test patch of waterproof membrane to test for acceptable
adhesion. Abrasive blasting is the preferred method for cleaning.
1. Achieve minimum 3 mil surface profile.
2. Immersion service: Near White Metal Blast, SSPC-SP-10 or NACE No. 2 Blast.
3. Non-immersion service: Commercial Blast, SSPC-SP-6 or NACE No. 3 Blast.
B. To prevent flash rust from occurring, Epoxy Primer may be used on freshly blasted
steel prior to coating with waterproofing.
3.7 INSTALLATION OF COLD FLUID-APPLIED WATERPROOFING
A. Apply primer to concrete surface a minimum of 15-mils wet thickness. A Uniform
coating free of holidays or pinholes is necessary to minimize outgassing effects curing
the application of the fluid-applied waterproofing to porous surfaces such as concrete.
Surfaces may require additional coats to obtain a pinhole free finish.
B. Allow primer to cure in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions before topcoating
with the fluid-applied waterproofing.
C. Apply fluid-applied waterproofing in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
D. Keep material containers tightly closed until ready for use.
E. Keep equipment, air supplies, and application surfaces dry.
F. Mix and apply when fluid-applied waterproofing is above 60°F (15°C).
G. Do not use adulterants, thinners, or cutback solutions.
H. Blend and mix 2-component materials in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
Do not hand mix components.
I. Maintain air supply for material spray application free of oil and water in accordance
with ASTM D4285.
J. Apply fluid-applied waterproofing directly to a clean and dry surface or to reinforcing
fabric.
K. Apply a 6 to 12-inch wide strip of scrim over cracks over 1/8-inch wide, non-working
joints, edges, and changes in substrate. Adhere center scrim over all joints by applying
a tack coat of the fluid-applied waterproofing.
L. Apply 1/2 to 3/4 inch cant bead at inside corners along the floor to wall transition
around the perimeter. Extend waterproofing coating over cants and up intersecting
surfaces as recommended in writing by manufacturer. Apply extra thickness of fluid
applied waterproofing with scrim application at all corners, intersections, angles, and
over substrate joints.
M. Apply sufficient fluid-applied waterproofing to achieve 120 mil dry-film thickness,
applied in two coats of 70 wet-mils.
