I® �� <br />EL CENTRO <br />CULTURAL <br />s <br />DE MEXICO <br />BOARD OF DIRECTORS <br />Benjamin Vazquez, Chair, <br />UCLA graduate with a Masters of Education in Urban Teaching, 2016; 11 years as a teacher SAUSD, World History and <br />Ethnic Studies; McCarthy Dressman foundation Award winner, $30K. Benjamin first came to el Centro when it was housed on <br />Broadway and 5t� Street and he soon created a class for local youth to participate in the community. Since then he has served as <br />an art teacher at El Centro for three years; organized Noche de Altares, Orange County's largest free Day of the Dead <br />celebration for 8 years; and served as the Barrio Writers Director for a year, and as an advisor for 3 years. <br />Carolina Socorro Sarmiento, <br />UCLA graduate with a Masters in Urban Planning from UCI and a PhD in urban Planning, from UCLA. She is currently an <br />Assistant Professor in Civil Society and Community Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Carolina's mother was <br />the founder of el Centro, but she became increasingly involved in 2002 when the first community center opened. Since then, she <br />has formed part of the Frente of el Centro, linking cultural work to social justice. <br />Crystal Gonzalez <br />Crystal Gonzalez is an experienced educator and community organizer. She holds a Masters degree in Education and a <br />teaching credential from the University of California, Irvine. Crystal specializes in curriculum development that supports <br />individual and neighborhood transformation. She is currently Program Director for The American Friends Service <br />Committee's Roots for Peace Program in Los Angeles. Crystal first met El Centro Cultural de Mexico as a volunteer in 2003. <br />She came through MEChA de UCI's Escuelita program. She has since participated as an after school youth mentor, children's <br />Son Jarocho music teacher, and cultural arts performance Coordinator <br />Elisabeth Le Guin <br />Elisabeth is a performer, musicologist and professor at UCLA. Elisabeth has taught at UCLA since 1997 with a particular focus <br />on undergraduate advising, the teaching of writing, international education, and the integration of performance with <br />scholarship. Elisabetb joined el Centro through son jaroeho and soon became a tallerista, or son Jarocho student. Today, <br />Elisabeth, continues to participate in the son jmrocho classes, and provides musical theory classes for free at el Centro. <br />Jose Manuel Cuevas <br />Manny is a senior operations manager at CoreLogic a leading provide of customer, financial and property information, analytics <br />and services to business and government. Responsible for providing technical expertise and leadership across broad range of <br />CoreLogic engagements that span data warehousing, transactional processing, performance excellence and Big Data. Manny is <br />member of the Orange County Business Intelligence group and also member of the Orange County CERT Mutual Aid <br />Program. Manny joined el Centura through Son Jarocho workshops. <br />Yuriana Velasco <br />Yuriana was born in Oaxaca, raised in Westminster, CA, and have been living in Santa Ana for the past ten years. She is a <br />Spanish high school teacher in Huntington Beach, where also serves as the adviser for the new ballet folkbrico club at her <br />current site. She has been part of the son jarocho program at El Centro Cultural de Mexico for the past ten years, where she has <br />also been an active volunteer. <br />
