MainPlace Mall Transformation Project 12126.001
search of historical earthquakes was performed using the computer program EQ
Search (Blake, 2000) for the time period between 1800 and 2018. Within that time
frame 549 earthquakes between magnitude 4.0 and 9.0 were found within a 62-
mile (100-kilometer) radius of the site. Of these earthquakes, the closest was
located 2.4 miles (3.9 kilometers) northwest of the site and occurred on May 22,
1902 (Appendix C, Seismicity Data). Although not precisely located, its epicenter
is located to the northwest of the project site. The causative fault is unknown;
however, the earthquake registered a magnitude of 4.3 Mw and induced an
estimated peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 0.15g at the project site. There are
records of one earthquake with a magnitude 7.0 or larger within the search
performed, which was a magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake that occurred on
December 16, 1858. The largest PGA at the site is estimated to have been
roughly 0.19g from the magnitude 6.3 Mw earthquake that shook the region on
March 11, 1933. For a general view of recorded historical seismic activity see
Figure 4, Regional Fault and Historic Seismicity Map.
Design Consideration: Design of the future improvements for the project
should be performed in accordance with all applicable current codes and
standards utilizing the appropriate seismic design parameters to reduce
seismic risk as defined by California Geological Survey (CGS) Chapter 2 of
Special Publication 117A (CGS, 2008). The 2016 edition of the California
Building Code (CBC) is the current edition of the code. Compliance with
these regulatory requirements and the utilization of appropriate seismic
design parameters selected by the design professionals would reduce
potential effects relating to seismic shaking.
The Code -based (2016 CBC) design and risk -targeted Maximum Considered
Earthquake (MCE) spectral acceleration parameters at five percent structural
damping are presented in the table below:
7
Leighton
