Course Methods:
Adult learning concepts are distilled from a 60-minute simulation in which participants teach a
partner a five-minute lesson. Each learner gets feedback on his natural teaching style and is
measured against ten aspects of his teaching style. Through a debriefing discussion,
participants identify what helps adults learn and remember and how to improve their teaching
style.
Unit 2: Prepare to Train: Think Like a Course Designer
■ Review the anatomy of a module
■ Use six steps to break down a task into teachable parts
■ Identify why you should bother with objectives
■ Write realistic instructional objectives
■ Select appropriate methods based on the learning objective
■ Use effective technical training methods for recall and application
■ Provide sufficient practice to change behavior
■ Pace methods to avoid boredom
Course Methods:
Participants review the components of and practice conducting a task analysis. Building on
the task analysis, learners write learning objectives that meet four criteria. Four tools are
introduced to support the use of adult learning principles in training, two are followed by a
case study to demonstrate their use. The tools include use of appropriate methods,
identifying the amount of practice needed to learn a skill, and how to pace training to avoid
boredom. The fourth tool suggests appropriate methods to train employees on technical
procedures, processes and concepts.
Unit 3: Facilitation Techniques
■ Make those butterflies work for you!
■ Practice six effective delivery characteristics
■ Get off to a good start — How to set and reset an adult learning climate
■ Determine what's in it for the learner?
■ Balance your time between climate setting, content and application
■ Use session starters to begin well: purpose of session starters, criteria for effective
starters, how to select session starters, and examples
■ Avoid overuse of lectures with participation techniques
■ Discover how to get the most from a discussion to enhance learning and reach a
goal
■ Identify four types of questions to facilitate learning and interaction
■ Effectively use basic and follow-up questions to direct learning
■ Get the right amount of class participation by using a six step approach to asking
questions
■ Provide useful feedback to change behavior
■ Focus on behaviors to improve performance
■ Conduct effective demonstrations with skill practice
■ Apply four problem learner strategies to deal with difficult situations
r.
©2022 The Training Clinic Confidential Proposal Page 5
