program follows guidelines established by the California Department of Public Health <br />Laboratory Field Services in preparation for the state and national phlebotomy technician <br />certification exams and employment as a certified phlebotomy technician. The program <br />focuses on state -identified basic and advanced topics of anatomy and medical terminology, <br />infection control, and procedures necessary to appropriately collect laboratory specimens and <br />communication with patients. This program will prepare the certified phlebotomy technician to <br />work in a clinical laboratory environment and healthcare setting. <br />This program is appropriate for students with more than 40 hours but less than 1040 hours of <br />on-the-job phlebotomy experience in the past 5 years. Students must have evidence of <br />completing a minimum of 50 venipunctures, e.g. Letter of Phlebotomy Experience for California <br />Certification (PDF) signed by an MD, DO, or CLB. Students must pass a national certification <br />examination from one of the certifying organizations approved by the California Department of <br />Public Health. <br />Duration 40 hours, Maximum length 2 months <br />Phlebotomy Technician I — 80 hour (classroom) <br />Program Description <br />The phlebotomist is one of the most important positions in the clinical laboratory. Without the <br />phlebotomist there would be no specimen for the clinical laboratory to run tests on. This class requires a clinical rotation <br />of a minimum of 40 hours and 50 venipunctures.
