HCA 302. Legal and Ethical Practice <br />3 credits <br />Introduction to biomedical and healthcare ethics from an <br />administrative perspective. Students learn to integrate <br />ethical and legal aspects into administrative decision - <br />making. Topics include a wide range of subjects to help <br />students understand how healthcare professionals and <br />consumers make difficult healthcare choices. The course will <br />also focus on the regulatory and business issues essential to <br />representing healthcare professionals and organizations <br />including laws that specifically regulate the internal <br />structure of healthcare organizations and the relationships <br />between healthcare providers. <br />HCA 305. Patient Care and Education <br />3 credits <br />An overview of the comprehensive health assessment, <br />including the physical, psychological, social, functional, and <br />environmental aspects of health. The process of data <br />collection, interpretation, documentation, and dissemination <br />of assessment data will also be addressed. Communication, <br />health histories, and psych000ccal impacts will also be <br />explored in the development of holistic health assessment <br />skills. <br />HCA 325. Health Information Technology <br />Management <br />3 credits <br />An introductory course for non -information management <br />students covering the history of healthcare informatics, <br />current issues, basic informatics concepts, and health <br />information management applications. Topics include HIPAA <br />and other legislation, application of electronic health <br />records, and other clinical and administrative applications of <br />health information systems. <br />HCA 335. Healthcare Organization and <br />Management <br />3 credits <br />The design and behavior of healthcare organizations. It <br />provides an overview of the various forces and elements that <br />shape the way healthcare is delivered and received in the <br />United States. Managerial issues of motivation, leadership, <br />work design, communication, conflict resolution and <br />negotiations will be discussed as well as how healthcare <br />organizations manage change, acquire resources and engage <br />in strategy planning. <br />HCA 405. Healthcare Economics <br />3 credits <br />An examination of the application of both micro and macro- <br />economic principles to the healthcare industry. This course <br />focuses on healthcare demand, healthcare supply behavior, <br />financial healthcare, public health insurance and issues of <br />economic measurement, i.e., cost benefit analysis and cost <br />effectiveness analysis. <br />HCA 410. Financial Accounting for Healthcare <br />3 credits <br />This course is designed to give healthcare -based non- <br />financial managers and students a general understanding <br />and practical application of accounting, its processes and <br />terminology, and the budgeting process related to the <br />healthcare environment. <br />HCA 415. Managed Care and Health Insurance <br />3 credits <br />A broad study of health insurance and reimbursement <br />methods used in various healthcare settings, including a <br />focus on managed care settings. Students will learn effective <br />techniques for managing departments that provide this <br />function and how major insurance programs and federal <br />health care legislation play a major role in this process. <br />HCA 420. Cost Management/Profitability <br />3 credits <br />This course covers the unique structure and process of <br />financial management in healthcare organizations. Students <br />learn to examine and understand statements of profit and <br />loss, balance sheets and cash now statements in order to <br />make administrative decisions regarding operations and <br />resource allocation. <br />HCA 425. Healthcare Marketing <br />3 credits <br />An examination of the role and function of marketing and <br />strategy development in healthcare organizations. Marketing <br />concepts including market research, segmentation, branding <br />and advertising are reviewed. Strategy development includes <br />the role of vision and mission, internal and external <br />assessment, developing strategic initiatives, tactical planning <br />and strategic execution. <br />HCA 440. Human Resources <br />3 credits <br />An overview of the principles and practices of human <br />resource management in health services organizations. <br />Attention is given to personnel management, major factors in <br />personnel problems and labor relations, and the <br />organization and diversity of personnel work including job <br />analysis, recruitment and retention, selection and placement, <br />training and development, performance appraisal and <br />compensation for an effective team.
