ORDINANCE NO. NS-1416 <br />PAGE NINE <br /> <br />Sec. 8-863. Made Electrodes (Section 250-83). <br /> <br /> Section 250-83 of the National Electrical Code is <br />amended to read as follows: <br /> <br />250-83. Made Electrodes. Where electrodes des- <br />cribed in Section 250.81 and 250.82 are not avail- <br />able, the grounding electrode shall consist of not <br />less than 20 feet of bare copper conductor not <br />smaller than No. 4; or not less than 20 feet of No. <br />4 steel reinforcing bar; or not less than 20 feet <br />of 3/4 inch galvanized steel conduit; or an <br />approved equal installed as follows: <br /> <br />The electrode shall be located in the bottom <br />of the foundation footing with minimum con- <br />crete encasement of 3 inches. One end of the <br />electrode shall extend out of the foundation <br />adjacent to the equipment to be grounded to <br />permit the grounding conductor to be secured <br />by an approved method. <br /> <br />EXCEPTION: <br /> <br />Where the above method is not <br />practical, the following electrodes <br />may be used upon approval of the <br />enforcing authority; <br /> <br />(1) <br /> <br />Plate Electrodes. Each plate electrode <br />shall present not less than 2 square feet <br />of exterior soil. Electrodes of iron or <br />steel plates shall be at least 1/4 inch <br />in thickness. Electrodes of nonferrous <br />metal shall be at least 0.06 inch in <br />thickness. <br /> <br />(2) <br /> <br />Pipe Electrodes. Electrodes of pipe or <br />conduit shall be not smaller than of the <br />3/4 inch trade size and where of iron or <br />steel, shall have the outer surface gal- <br />vinized or otherwise metal-coated for <br />corrosion protection. Minimum of 8 feet <br />to be driven in the ground. <br /> <br />(3) <br /> <br />Rod Electrodes. Electrodes of rods of <br />steel or iron shall be at least 5/8 inch <br />in diameter. Approved rods of non-ferrous <br />materials or their approved equivalent used <br />for electrodes shall be not less than 1/2 <br />inch in diameter. Minimum of 8 feet to be <br />driven in the ground. <br /> <br />Sec. 8-867. Connection to Electrodes (Section 250-115). <br /> <br /> Section 250-115 of the National Electrical Code is <br />amended by adding thereto a sentence to be designated (e) to <br />read as follows: <br /> <br />(e) The service ground clamp shall be readily <br />accessible. <br /> <br /> <br />
