Chairman <br />appointed the Council, as a whole, as committee. <br /> <br />A petition was Mead signed by thirty-seven members of lower rank <br />of the Fire Dept.citing the fact that Chief Oarthe now has to <br />relieve assistant and battalion .chiefs on their days off, adding <br />that he should be free to direct the overall activities of the <br />department at all times; also that the Chief's salary should be <br />comparable to t~ose paid fire chiefs of cities of approximately <br />the same size as Santa Ana. On motion of Trustee Mandy, seconded <br />by Reed and carried, requests were denied. <br /> <br />Roll Call Trustees Ayes Allen A. Mandy, Virgil H. Reed, <br /> R. Carson Smith. <br /> Trustees Noes Courtney R. Chandler <br /> Not Voting Trustees W.J.Cheney <br /> <br />On motion of Trustee Reed, seconded by Chandler and carried, the <br />opinion of the City Attorney reference to Council's authority to' <br />reduce wages ~f Civil Service Employees, was received and filed. <br />On motion of Trustee Reed, seconded by Chandler and carried, the <br />effective d~te of reduction in salaries of Parking Meter 0f.ficers <br />shall be April l, 1949. <br /> <br />On motion of Trustee Mandy, seconded by Reed and carried, the <br />monthly reports for March of the Building, City Judge and Police <br />Departments, were received and filed. <br /> <br />On motion of Trustee Chandler, seconded by Cheney and carried, the <br />demands as audited by the Finance Conmmittee, were approved and <br />Clerk authorized to draw warrants covering demands numbering 3~15 <br />to 3729 inclusive. <br /> <br />The report of the committee was read on the operation of serve <br />yourself service stations dispensing gasoline and Trustee Mandy <br />stated that an inspection of ten such stations had beeu made. <br />Messrs. Ttday and Quick stated their reasons for favoring such <br />filling stations and Messrs. Brockman and Dutton opposed the <br />operation of this type of station. On motion of Trustee Mandy, <br />seconded by Reed and carried, the report of the committee on serve <br />yourself service stations was accepted and Ordinance not to be <br />changed at this time as the Fire Chief has the authority to issue <br />or deny permits for the operation of serve yourself stations. <br /> <br />On motion of Trustee Reed, seconded by Cheney and carried, the <br />recommendation of the Planning Contmission that parking be eliminat <br />on the south side of Tenth St. between Main and Bush Sts., in <br />to provide two, full-width lanes for traffic, and, that the effect <br />of the Jog on Bush St. at 10th St. be reduced, was t~bled for <br />further study. <br /> <br />On motion of. Trustee Reed, seconded by ~andy and carried, matter <br />of abandonment Of alley bounded by 1st St., Cedar St., Evergreen <br />St. and Walnut St. was tabled until next meeting. <br /> <br /> <br />
