Planning Commission on November 8, 1954, be approved and granted by <br /> this Council, permitting Southern California Edison Company: first, <br /> to increase the capacity of the Sullivan Substation in 1954 by the <br /> addition of three transformers and appurtenant equipment and facilitie ; <br /> and, second, to increase the capacity of the Sullivan Substation sub- <br /> sequent to 1954 from time to time and aB required by local' demands <br /> until the ultimate capacity of the Sullivan Substation ie reached, all <br /> such increase in capacity to conform to and be in accordance with, as <br /> nearly as practicable, the plan and design as shown on Exhibit A, <br /> attached to the Variance Application. <br /> <br /> In Re Communications were resd from the Planning Commission recommending <br /> Variance <br /> F.J.Foral denial of variance application of Frank J. and Hazel M. Foral to permi~i <br /> <br /> the construction of a one-story building on the front 54' of lot and <br /> <br /> of a one-story residence on the rear portion of lot situated west of <br /> ll5 Stanford Street, to be used for a retail business of selling and <br /> repairing musical instruments and related items, with a 2½' x 6~ neon <br /> sign, and from the Department of Public Works that replacement of <br /> broken sidewalks is needed to bring it up to present city standards. <br /> <br /> Mrs. Bertha Cunningham, 122 Stanford and Mrs. F.H.Johnston, 211 Stanford, <br /> objected to the granting of the variance and stated that this area is <br /> in the residential zone. Frank J. Foral presented a petition signed <br /> by forty-two persons favoring the establishment of the retail business. <br /> On motion of Councilman Dahl, seconded by Jerome and carried, the <br /> petition was received and filed. On motion of Councilman McBride, <br /> seconded by Larsen and carried, the recommendation of the Planning <br /> Commission was approved and variance denied. At the request of the <br /> applicant and on motion of Councilman McBride, seconded by Larsen and <br /> carried, the Clerk was authorized to return the petition to Mr. Foral <br /> after having said petition photographed for Council record. <br /> <br /> In Re. On motion of Councilman Jerome, seconded by Larsen and carried, the <br /> Variance <br /> Prisciliana Esparza recommendation of the Planning Commission was approved and variance <br /> <br /> granted to Prisciliana Esparza to construct a two-unit building on <br /> property at the northeast corner of First Street and Western Avenue, <br /> one side to be used for a furniture upholstery shop and the other side <br /> to be used as rental for business purposes, in R-2 zone, subject to <br /> certain conditions. <br /> <br />In Re On motion of Councilman Dahl, seconded by Jerome and carried, the <br />Variance <br />Roman Catholic recommendation of the Planning Commission was approved and variance <br />Archbishop of <br />i Los Angeles granted to the Roman Catholic Ar~hbishop of Los Angeles to construct a <br /> <br /> one-story classroom school on property on the east side of Sycamore <br /> Street between Borchard and Wilshire Avenues, in connection with exist- <br /> ing school and church at 109 Borchard Avenue, and proposing to build <br /> the classroom school on the Sycamore Street frontage, set out to the <br /> property line, with no entrance to the building from Sycamore Street, <br /> but with windows only on the street side, the entrances to the class- <br /> rooms to be from the playground side. <br /> <br /> <br />
