CITY OF SAi~TA ANA <br /> <br />COMPUTER OPERATOR <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under direction, performs technical work in the operation of electrOnic data pro- <br />cessing equipment including a computer and peripheral equipment functioning under <br />control of an operating system, including off-line EAM equipment. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Operates an electronic data processing computer and peripheral equipment including <br />magnetic tape drives; magnetic disk units, high-speed card reader, punch and high <br />speed drum printer operating under control of a disk operating system; sets up <br />equipment in accordance with program and operating instructions; processes various <br />production r,ns according to a scheduled sequence using magnetic tape, disk or <br />punched cards; determines cause of machine stoppages and takes remedial action; <br />reports machine malfunction and breakdown to supervisor; maintains operating <br />records such as machine performance and production records; may perform simple <br />programming work under close supervision in a training capacity; performs related <br />work as required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />An employee in this classification monitors and controls an electronic computer <br />and operates the peripheral equipment necessary in processing the various applica- <br />tions. Direction is received through a work schedule, with routine assignments <br />carried out independently. Work is reviewed for completeness, neatness and accuracy, <br />while in progress, and by tile observation of results achieved. <br /> <br />RECOMb~NDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Graduation from high school supplemented by successful completion of formal training <br />in computer operation and one year's experience in operating electronic data pro- <br />cessing computers and peripheral devices or any equivalent combination of training <br />and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills: <br /> <br />Thorough knowledge of: standard methods and practices involved in operating electro- <br />nic data processing equipment including computers and peripheral devices. Knowledge <br />of: disk operating systems and magnetic tape applications. Ability to: understand <br />and carry out complex oral and written instructions; organize work and carry through <br />established procedures and work plans to meet established schedules. Skill in: <br />operating a computer and peripheral equipment. <br /> <br /> <br />
