~ITY OF iANfAANA <br /> <br />GARAGE FOREMAN <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under direction, supervises and coordinates the activities involved in the main- <br />tenanca and repair of automotive, construction and other mechanical equipment. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Plans, schedules, lays out, assigns and supervises the work of mechanics and <br />other skilled and semi-skilled workers engaged in the maintenance, overhaul, <br />repair and modification of automotive, heavy-duty construction and other mech- <br />aHical equipment; sets operating procedures and production standards; instructs, <br />trains and evaluates work performance of assigned personnel; interprets organi- <br />zational policy to subordinates and enforces safety regulations; makes initial <br />equipment inspections in difficult cases and diagnoses trouble; estimates repair <br />costs, incluuing parts, materials and labor; inspects work in progress and upon <br />completion; analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving <br />work problems; initiates or reco~mmends personnel actions and receives and responds <br />· to employee grievances; insures employees are prpperly supplied with materials, <br />special tools and equipment; requisitions needed parts, tools and supplies; super- <br />vises maintenance of garage facilities, including machinery and equipment; main- <br />tains standard shop records and prepares routine reports; assists in handling <br />administrative functions, such as coordinating equipment maintenance activities <br />with other departments; recorm~ends measures to improve operating methods and <br />procedures, manpower and equipment utilizations working conditions, etc.; assumes <br />duties of higher level supervisor in the letter's absence; and performs related <br />work as required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />Supervision and limited administrative duties are the primary responsibilities <br />of an employee in this class. Work is performed with considerable independence <br />%rlthin the framework of policies and objectives established by an administrative <br />superior who reviews work through reports, conferences and evaluation of results <br />obtained. <br /> <br />HECO~NDED MINIMUM qUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Graduation from high school and three years' full-time experience as a journeyman <br />equipment mechanic including one year in a supervisory capacity or any equivalent <br />combination of training and experience which provide the following knowledge, skills <br />and abilities: <br /> <br />Thorou~l knowledge of: the theory and principles of mechanics of the internal <br />combustion engine, gear boxes, chassis and parts; the construction, assembly, <br />adjustment and maintenance of diversified automotive equipment; of tools, equip- <br />merit, materials and procedures for the performance of the duties of the position, <br />which includes grinders, drills, reamers, micrometers, brake relining and drum <br />grinding machines, valve refacing and seat grinding tools. Ability to: plan, <br />direct and supervise the work of subordinates and to make efficieDt use of labor <br />and materials at the disposal of the garage; keep stock and performance records <br />and prepare reports; instruct subordinates in tho safe and proper operation of <br />shop equipment. <br /> <br />Special Requirement: <br /> <br />Possession of a valid California Driver's License. <br /> <br /> <br />
