CITY OF SANTA AIqA <br /> <br />EqU'rPMEN~ MECHAI~C ~ <br /> <br />~EFINITION <br /> <br />Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the repair, overhaul and <br />maintenance of a wide variety of automotive, heavy-duty construction and other <br />mechanized equipment. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Performs field and shop inspections of automotive, truck and heavy-duty con- <br />struction equipment to determine repair needs or estimate cost of repairs; makes <br />field repairs when possible; overhauls, repairs and adjusts internal combustion <br />engines, air compressors and pumps, clutch assemblies, axle assemblies, trans- <br />missions, differentials, ignitions and electrical, fuel, hydraulic and cooling <br />systems; fits and adjusts bearings; repairs and installs hydraulic controls; <br />relines and adjusts brakes; makes minor body repairs and performs regular pre- <br />.ventive maintenance on a variety of mechanical equipment; assists in in-service <br />training programs for apprentice-level workers; performs related duties as <br />required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISIIING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />Thls is skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance, overhaul and <br />repair of a wide variety of light and heavy gasoline and diesel-powered auto- <br />motive, truck and heavy-duty construction equipment in accordance with standard <br />trade practices. Supervision may be exercised over semi-skilled helpers and <br />apprentice-level workers. <br /> <br />MI,NIMUM BASIC QUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Completion of the tenth grade and two years' full-time journeyman-level experience <br />in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment or any equivalent amount <br />of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and <br />abilities: <br /> <br />Considerable knowledge of: the assembly, adjustment, maintenance and overhaul <br />of a wide variety of automobiles, trucks and specialized construction equipment; <br />the operation and care of the internal combustion engine, of chassis and parts <br />and their replacement. Skill in: the use of all types of shop tools such as drills, <br />grinders, micrometers, reamers, brake relining and drum grinding machines; per- <br />forming valve refacing and seat grinding. Ability to: carry out oral and written <br />directions; perform heavy physical work and maintain effective working relation- <br />ships with fellow employees. <br /> <br />Special Requirements: Possession of a valid California Driver's License. <br />Poss~ssion of a complete set of basic mechanic hand tools. Possession of a <br />valid California Class "A" Installers and Adjusters License. <br /> <br /> <br />
