CITY OF SANTA AIqA EqU'rPMEN~ MECHAI~C ~ ~EFINITION Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the repair, overhaul and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive, heavy-duty construction and other mechanized equipment. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Performs field and shop inspections of automotive, truck and heavy-duty con- struction equipment to determine repair needs or estimate cost of repairs; makes field repairs when possible; overhauls, repairs and adjusts internal combustion engines, air compressors and pumps, clutch assemblies, axle assemblies, trans- missions, differentials, ignitions and electrical, fuel, hydraulic and cooling systems; fits and adjusts bearings; repairs and installs hydraulic controls; relines and adjusts brakes; makes minor body repairs and performs regular pre- .ventive maintenance on a variety of mechanical equipment; assists in in-service training programs for apprentice-level workers; performs related duties as required. DISTINGUISIIING FEATURES OF THE CLASS Thls is skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance, overhaul and repair of a wide variety of light and heavy gasoline and diesel-powered auto- motive, truck and heavy-duty construction equipment in accordance with standard trade practices. Supervision may be exercised over semi-skilled helpers and apprentice-level workers. MI,NIMUM BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Completion of the tenth grade and two years' full-time journeyman-level experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment or any equivalent amount of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities: Considerable knowledge of: the assembly, adjustment, maintenance and overhaul of a wide variety of automobiles, trucks and specialized construction equipment; the operation and care of the internal combustion engine, of chassis and parts and their replacement. Skill in: the use of all types of shop tools such as drills, grinders, micrometers, reamers, brake relining and drum grinding machines; per- forming valve refacing and seat grinding. Ability to: carry out oral and written directions; perform heavy physical work and maintain effective working relation- ships with fellow employees. Special Requirements: Possession of a valid California Driver's License. Poss~ssion of a complete set of basic mechanic hand tools. Possession of a valid California Class "A" Installers and Adjusters License.
