Variance Appl No. 1098 <br />//l. Sar~y Oteiner <br /> <br />Communication was read from the Planning Con~nission recommending approval <br />of Variance Application No. 1098 i~iled by A. Sandy Steiner to construct a <br />building to be used for Frostee Freeze ice cream drive-in, with no inside <br />seating, no Juke boxes nor cigarette machines, and also construct ouilding <br />at rear of lot with 18 parking spaces, to be used for modern, automatic <br /> <br />laundry, with ample setbacks and allowance fc~ future widening of hdinger <br /> on pr~operty situated at 13226 and 13232 Edinger Street, subject to conditions. <br />Stree_%/ ~rs. ~¥ade Herrin, 1505 N. Baker Street, a member of the Smedley <br /> <br />Junior High School P.T.A. dejected to the establishing of any type of <br />eating place so close to the school, and there are other schools in close <br />proximity, the school operate closed ca~ous so there would be no diffi- <br />culty during school hours, but after school. Mrs. Herrin stated children <br />have a tendency to congregate after school hours and feels there may be <br />vandalism when the children frequent such an establis~ent. Paul Dunn, <br />12972 Occidental, member of the P.T. A of Smedley Junior High School <br />and the Diamond School, stated there had been difficulty with a~estab- <br />lishment of similar nature at this location in the past and objected <br />to this type of business. The applicant stated he purchased this property <br />scme 2~ years ago, and for the past 20 years or more it has oeen a business <br />corner. The property was formerly used for service station purposes witch <br />a two bedroom house in the rear. The last tenant operated an eating estab- <br />lishment and there was considerable trouole due to his manner of operation. <br />Mrs. Louise Perkins, member of the Smedley Junior High School and Diamond <br />School P.T.A., stated she had no objection to a business being conducted <br />at this location but protested this type of establishment. Mrs. Andrew M. <br />~eyer stated she has children in Smedley Junior High, and the school <br />suffered adverse puolicity sometime ago due to an eating place at this <br /> <br />location known as "Rock and Roll" and objected to a business of similar <br /> a Santa Arm Register reporter, <br />nature being started. ~alph Worsham~ objected to the granting of the <br /> <br />Variance because of the difficulty experienced during the operation of <br /> <br />a similar business under a former owner. It was moved by Councilman <br /> <br />Gould and seconded Dy Brewer, that a resolution be adopted over-ruling the <br /> <br />rec ........ endation of the Planning Comissic~ insofar as this Variance is <br /> <br />concerned, permitting the construction of a laundromat out denying the <br />sale of food. Oouncllmar~ Hall stated he recognized the fact there are <br />problems but did not feel the locatica had any oearing. This is a <br />nationally recognized business with a good reputation, and thsre are <br />a n,,mber of undesirable businesses which could he put in at this loc- <br /> <br />ation. <br /> <br />Roll Oall <br /> <br /> Ayes, <br /> Noes, <br /> Aosent, <br /> <br />~otion lost. <br /> <br />It was moved by Councilman Hubbard, seconded by Hall azi carried, that <br />Variance Application No. 1098 be granted, su0ject to conditions, and the <br />further conditions that the applicant shall have no sound reproduction <br />equipment of any kind on the premises, nor a loud speaker system, cigarette <br /> <br />Councilmen Stanley C.
