and carried, Council approved the participation of Paul Chace, Bowers <br />Museum Technician, as a museum graduate intern with the New York <br />Historical Association in Cooperstown, New York, for a nine month <br />period from September, 1969 to June 1970, ~on a grant, with no expense <br />to the City. Councilman Herrin voted 'No'. <br /> <br />SANITATION DISTRICT BOARDS Following a recommendation by <br /> Mayor Griset, on motion of Council- <br /> man Herren, seconded by Councilman <br />Villa and unanimously carr~ied~ Councilman .Wade ;Herrin was appointed <br />as Director of Sanitation District~Boards 2 and 3, replacing Mayor G riset <br />on these two Boards; Councilman Walter Bro~ks was appointed Mayor <br />Griset's Alternate ~on Sanitation District Boards 1 and 7; and Council- <br />man Jerry Patterson was n~med Councilman Herrin's Alternate on <br />Sanitation District Boards'2 a~d 3. ~ <br /> <br />REGISTER ARTICLE Councilman Villa criticized The <br /> Register for an article in which the <br /> headlines read "Mexicans Riot", <br />stating these individuals were Americans of Mexican descent and that <br />the paper should know the difference; if they are born in this country, <br />they are American citizens, and it should have been so designated in <br />the newspaper. Councilman Villa said that he did not object to being <br />classified as a Mexican, but he did object that he is not allowed to be <br />classified as an American. He stated that Americans of Mexican <br />descent had rioted, not Mexicans. <br /> <br />COUNCILMAN ABSENCE On motion of Councilman Patter- <br /> son, seconded by Councilman <br /> Thurman .and unanimously carried, <br />Councilman Brooks was granted permission to be absent from the <br />July 21st Council meeting. <br /> <br />RECESS At 5:15 P.M., the meeting was <br /> recessed to 7:30 P. M., at which <br /> time it was reconvened with the <br />same Council members present. Following the Pledge of Allegiance <br />to the Flag, the Invocation was delivered by the Reverend Gala1 Gough <br />of the First United Methodist Church. <br /> <br />COMMENDATIONS <br /> <br />Mayor Griset presented Resolutions <br />of Commendation to Theodore W. Jesse, <br /> <br /> retiring member of the' Planning <br />Commission, and to Arthur Bradley, retiring member of the Library <br />Board.
