.'

.'

YMCA Staff

At the YMCA of Orange County, our camp staff members make the difference!
Every year our camp directors review hundreds of applications from adults seeking a
summer experience as a camp staff member. In fact, research shows that more than
50% of our camp staff apply for work again the next summer, and that at least 25% of
our staff apply because they enjoyed a YMCA camp experience as a youth.

Interviews are extended to those applicants that meet the following minimum
qualifications:
. 19 years of age
. At least one completed year of college courses
. Previous experience working with youth
. Current CPR & First Aid certifications
. The desire to make a difference in young people's lives

Supervisors are also required to have previous supervisory experience in a youth
program.

Staff interviews are conducted in a group setting, highlighting the focus on small group
development in all camp activities. Selected candidates then interview individually with a
director. A minimum of three references are verified, and candidates must pass a drug
screen and LiveScan fingerprinting process prior to employment.

The group interview process combined with the in-depth background checks help the
YMCA of Orange County to successfully identify the top-notch staff members who will
complete our pre-summer training program.

YMCA of Orange County camp staff members attend extensive training workshops,
including:

Developmentally appropriate activities and instruction
Creating emotional and physical safety for campers,
Recognition and management of emergency situations
Creating magical camp memories

During this intense, 30 hour comprehensive training program, camp staff participate in
interactive learning sessions covering YMCA policies and practices, customer service
with camp families and the public, the human dynamics of working with each age group
of children, program delivery expectations, safety and risk assessment tools for all
activities and program locations. The final training component is an actual dress
rehearsal of a camp day.

Staff members attend ongoin9 weekly meetings to discuss current work processes and
preventative safety topics. This summer, a mid-season staff training day will also be
provided to recognize staff accomplishments and provide new goals.

\VOAY CAM~

We build Strong kids, strong families, Strong communities.
