DAMAGE ~'O PUBLIC Councilman Markel stated that <br />PROPERTY in the annual report from the <br /> Recreation and Parks Department <br />dated July 13, 1971, there was an indication that damage to property in public <br />parks amounted to $4,675 for the past year; that the previous year it was <br />$917.25. He asked what measures the Staff is taking to combat this damage. <br /> <br />The City Manager stated that this is a continuously spiraling trend, but as <br />yet has not reached a point where it would be economically feasible to add <br />personnel and equipment for patrolling the parks, but that the Police <br />Department will be asked to give special attention to the problem. <br /> <br />CITY SELECTION COMMITTEE Councilman Patterson read <br />ATTORNEY'S FEES a letter from Mayor Just, City <br /> of Fountain Valley, acting as <br />Chairman of the Selection Committee, Orange County League of CRies, <br />requesting cities to participate in payment of attorney's fees incurred in <br />the amount of approximately $5,000 to defend a law suit brought by Louis <br />R. Reinhardt against all Mayors of Orange County as a result of the election <br />of Mr. Hyde to the Local Agency Formation Commission. Councilman <br />Patterson moved that the request for funds and the City of Santa Ana's <br />participation in financing these actions be denied. Motion was seconded <br />by Councilman Villa. <br /> <br />After further discussion, Councilman Patterson amended his motion to <br />receive and file the communication from Mayor Just; Councilman Vill~, who <br />seconded the original motion, would not agree. . . <br /> <br />Councilman Patterson suggested that the motion should be to receive and <br />file this communication and send a letter to Mayor Just indicating the City <br />of Santa Ana declines to participate in the payment of this legal action. <br />Councilman Villa stated that he wanted action that the City of Santa Ana <br />flatly and categorically declines to participate, and send a letter so stating. <br />Councilman Evans agreed. Councilman Herrin stated he agreed with Mr. <br />Villa's and Mr. Evans' ~Ositffin, but that they were now dealing with the <br />letter and it was to the City's best interests to receive and file. <br /> <br />Councilman Patterson stated the City's fight is not with the League or <br />the Selection Committee; that Council may strongly disagree with some of <br />the Committee members, but must accept what has been done; that Santa <br />Ana's fight, if any, is with the Irvine Company. <br /> <br />Councilman Patterson's amended motion, seconded by Councilman Herrin, <br />that Mayor Just's letter be received and filed, and Mayor Just be advised <br />that the City of Santa Aha does not desire to be involved in the financing of <br />litigation in this matter, carried on the following roll call vote: <br /> <br />AYES: <br />NOES: <br />ABSENT: <br /> <br />Patterson, I-Ierrin, Griset, Yamamoto <br />Villa, Evans, Markel <br />None <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL -282- August 16, 1971 <br /> <br /> <br />
