Standby Zones
The maximum number of taxis allowed at The Depot taxi stand is four. Not every Primary
driver will be able to locate there, therefore, we have standby zones for Primary drivers to
work in before moving over to the taxi stand. There are six surrounding standby zones
which drivers are able to book into while waiting for a position at the taxi stand. The six
standby zones encompass about a square mile each of area, surrounding The Depot Zone.
Driver inactivity is alleviated during slower and off-peak periods using this system.
Command. Control, and Replenishment of Vehicle Ouantity
A White and Yellow Cab Inc. utilizes three methods to ensure the quantity of required taxis
at The Depot stand zone. The three methods are used in conjunction with each other, simul-
taneously.
The fast is through dispatcher supervisor monitoring. The dispatch supervisor has a real
time GPS map available, centered on The Depot, next to their primary monitor. If taxis are
seen leaving the stand, turn their meters on, or ejected from the stand zone through GPS
validation - dispatch is alerted and may message the fleet, an individual driver, or all
primary drivers to provide coverage.
The second method is through the taxi driver's MDT. DDS is able to provide all stand zone
and zone information to the drivers directly. This is on the driver's default screen. There is
no toggling to check, the attention of the driver is front and center. Drivers are able to see
the activity level in a stand zone or zone, indicating average wait times for trips. Drivers are
also able to see the number of taxis located in a stand zone or zone. In the case of stand
zones and The Depot, drivers are also able to see exactly the number of taxis and the vehicle
ID numbers of drivers in line. This information updates every 15 seconds. Primary drivers
are required to maintain the quantity of taxis at the line through information provided
directly to them.
The third method is through the taxi driver's MDT, but this time, using the messaging capa-
bilities to "talk" directly to the dispatcher. The driver is able to real time message the dis-
patcher. An example of current messages in our system include: Send One Taxi - Send Two
Taxis - Send a Minivan - Send an ADA Van - etc. In the event a more sophisticated message
needs to be communicated, driver's may go to our voice CB channel and communicate.
Messages are required to be sent by the first driver in line ( to the dispatcher ) at the
stand when a passenger load is imminent.
Finally, oversight by the driver supervisor and General Manager are provided on a regular
basis. The three method system guarantees superior stand replenishment without causing
undue waiting of primary drivers. We will only allow the taking of street calls by primary
drivers when a more than adequate reserve of drivers is available. Drivers at the stand will
not be allowed to bid or respond to other calls when in line. Primary drivers will prima-
rily be focused on The Depot stand replenishment, and not in the taking of "street
calls" or other demands or contracts.
