<br />3. ATHLETIC FIELD RESERVATION <br />Staff presented the athletic field reservation process. Letters will be sent out to all sports <br />organizations, requiring the organizations to submit all registration requirements to the city <br />by March I st. Currently, out of 39 sports organizations 10 are in compliance. <br /> <br />The Parks Recreation and Community Services Agency is currently looking into reservation <br />software that will assist us in improving customer service and enhance communication on <br />field usage among staff. Staff is working with Information Systems to ensure the software is <br />compatible with the city equipment. <br /> <br />Staff is also looking into establishing a Player Development Program to assist quality players <br />develop their skills. <br />ACTION ITEM: Requested a copy of the compliance letter that is being sent to the sports <br />leagues, identifying the March I st deadline. A copy should also be sent to elected officials. <br /> <br />4. SANTA ANA ZOO ANTEATER EXHIBIT <br />Staff presented a report as a follow-up to an idea of establishing an anteater exhibit at the <br />zoo. Staff indicated the Santa Ana Zoo Master Plan currently identifies an anteater exhibit in <br />Phase 7 of the Dry Tropical Forest Area. This animal is not commonly displayed among the <br />zoos; therefore it would have a good exhibit value in our zoo. It can be displayed in a mixed <br />species exhibit with a variety of other animals. The exhibit cost would vary depending ifthe <br />exhibit were a single species exhibit or a mixed species exhibit. The operational cost will be <br />minimal and would not require additional zoo staff. <br /> <br />Staff provided a news article of 'Spike' the anteater in Hilo, Hawaii that was adopted by the <br />University of Cali fomi a in Irvine, whose mascot is an anteater. <br />ACTION ITEM: Recommended staff contact UCI on the possibility the university would <br />want to adopt another anteater. <br /> <br />5. SANTA ANA RIVER TASK FORCE <br />On November 15, 2004, the City Council approved the formation of a Santa Ana River Task <br />Force to study the possibility of restoring the natural habitat environment and providing <br />recreational opportunities in and/or adjacent to the river. <br /> <br />Staff presented a list of organizations and neighborhood associations that could provide input <br />to the report and are possible representatives on the task force. The council committee <br />reviewed the list, a draft letter and a draft application that will be sent to the various <br />organizations to see if they are interested to serve on the committee.
