Helping Others Prepare for Eternity, Hope Community Services, Inc., the Association of Vietnamese Language and Culture Schools of Southern California, Abrazar, Inc., the Korean - American Coal ition - Orange County, and the City of Santa Ana have met the match requirement. The First District Board of Supervisors requests approval for allocation of $1,037,336 in existing Fund 130 budgeted funds to the projects identified below. Santa Ana Zoo "Tierra de las Pampas" Permanent Exhibit ($100,000): The Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park is a twenty acre zoological garden which opened in 1952. The "Tierra de las Pampas" exhibit will showcase animals from the Pampas region of South America, extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the Andes Mountains, primarily in Argentina and Uruguay. This permanent exhibit will be home to Giant Anteaters, the Greater Rheas birds, and Guanacos, an Andean camel. Integrated within this effort are walkways with viewing overlooks, education nodes for school groups and organized classes, interpretive graphics that speak to both pre- school and young adult students and graphics which encourage interaction between parent and child. Funds will go to the City of Santa Ana for completion of this project. Liberty Park Police Memorial ($10,000): The Westminster Police Officers Foundation was established in June 2004 to honor our fallen police officers. A statue serving as a memorial will be built as an improvement to Liberty Park. With nearby senior centers and residential areas, this park improvement will serve as a place for officers and the public to reflect on the sacrifices made by the fallen police officers. Logan Park "Chepa's Park" Renovations ($5,000): Logan Park is a half -acre property which is located just south of the Santa Ana Freeway in the City of Santa Ana. The Logan Park site is made up of three residential lots and was originally acquired for the extension of Civic Center Drive. Through a community effort to preserve the neighborhood, the residents convinced the Santa Ana City Council to allow the neighborhood to develop a park site on this property. The Logan Neighborhood Committee has taken charge of the property since 1971 when they constructed a handball court, irrigation system, all purpose court, and an indoor recreation center. These funds will be used to help purchase a swing set and the necessary construction materials to secure the set and comply with appropriate regulations. El Salvador Park Basketball Court Renovations ($9,000): The El Salvador Park in Santa Ana serves many youth within its 11 acres. The park has two lighted softball diamonds (used also for football and soccer), basketball and handball courts, playground area, and picnic area with barbecue pits. Netz 4 Life, Inc. is a non - profit organization that uses the basketball courts at this park to teach disadvantaged youth how to play basketball and interact with others, and plans to use these funds to resurface and two tone repaint two full court outdoor basketball courts at the El Salvador Park. In addition, four backboards and four rims will be replaced on the new courts. Santa Ana Police Athletic Activity League Basketball Court Renovations ($33,675): In order to combat gang violence, resist the temptation of joining criminal street gangs, and encourage youths to stay in school, the Santa Ana Police Department in conjunction with the Santa Ana Parks and Recreation Department has formed the Santa Ana Police Athletic Activity League ( SAPAAL). SAPAAL is a crime prevention program that employs educational, athletic, and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between youths and law enforcement. SAPAAL will focus its efforts on at risk students. These funds will be used to help build a basketball court, monkey bars, and install an alarm system and parking gate on the exterior of the SAPAAL building. Funds will go to the Orange County Community Foundation for completion of this project. Page 4
