Describe how program will deliver academic assistance to raise the skill level of youth who are <br />basic skill deficient. <br />The OCCC will use a standardized TARE test to determine basic math and reading skill levels. All <br />students enrolled into the John Muir Charter School will be issued the California High School Exit <br />Exam (CAHSEE). The test monitors progress towards meeting the high school exit criteria, academic <br />progress, and literacy and numeracy gains which are required by OCCC charter school. If students fail <br />the CAHSEE test, they will be required to attend tutoring sessions once a week with a John Muir <br />Charter School Staff and register with an online program (Skill Tutor) which allows students to self <br />tutor and improve math and reading skill levels. <br />Participants will meet daily with certificated teachers for a total of 10 hours per week of in-class <br />instruction and tutoring to deliver academic assistance to raise the skill level of basic skills deficient <br />youth. As mentioned above, the OCCC John Muir Charter School delivers its academic instruction <br />knowing that most corpsmembers' basic academic skills are below the 8"' grade. In addition to <br />classroom based instruction, other assistance provided maybe: field based, on-line, individual, <br />small/large group, crew-based, using demonstrations, lectures, packets, guest speakers, and individual <br />research. <br />4. Will the participant receive a certificate of completion or accomplishment for participation z Will <br />the certificate count for WIA credential attainment rate? <br />OCCC corpsmembers may receive several certificates of completion or accomplishment for <br />participation as follows: <br />• California high school diploma; <br />• AmeriCorps Education Award (scholarship); <br />• Forklift, chainsaw, Red Cross CPR/First Aid Certifications; <br />• Corpsmember Bonus Plan awards include a certificate plus a cash bonus. <br />A high school diploma is astate-recognized certificate that can count in the WIA credential rate. A <br />CPR/First Aide or Forklift certification can count as a credential if participant chooses to use this <br />credential as a condition to employment elsewhere. Both certifications come in the form of a state- <br />recognized license which can count in WIA credential rate. Other certificates come internally from the <br />OCCC and are not necessarily state recognized. <br />Page 11 of 21 <br />
